Where you’ll be working

Our energy landscape is going through a time of profound change. A challenge touching every part of our society, we need to eradicate carbon emissions to halt the effects of climate change. We need to change how we live our lives and replace the use of fossil fuels for transport and heat.

Electricity will be at the heart of the solution, through electric vehicles and heat pumps. And with more renewables generation and other technologies connected to the electricity grid than ever before, it’s our role to make sure we create a more efficient, cleaner, greener network to accommodate this increase in demand.

Within SP Energy Networks, we are focusing on harnessing technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. With distribution networks designed for predictable, stable demand, it’s vital we upgrade our network to create the flexibility required to cope with the extensive changes to electricity demand, generation and consumer behaviour. Through technology and innovation, we will enable a consumer-led revolution in the use and operation of our system. It will undergo the biggest changes to its design and operation for over half a century and you can be part of it.

We know people are central to building a better future, quicker and we need talented, hardworking and flexible people to join us

You’ll find more information about SP Energy Networks, including details of our current projects, on our website (opens in a new window).

What you’ll be doing

The Quantity Surveying (QS) Team is responsible for delivering commercial support, expertise and knowledge from Contract Award stage through to the conclusion of the Final Account for a portfolio of Distribution and Transmission network engineering and construction projects. We’re involved in a variety of exciting projects such as the multi-million-pound investment in our electricity transmission network across Ayrshire to support green energy solutions such as electric vehicles (EV’s) and heat pumps.

As a QS Graduate Apprentice, you’ll be a key member of the team, playing a vital role assisting in the delivery of fundamental QS activities that will support your studies and develop your experience. You’ll have the opportunity to be involved in multiple tasks such as assessing monthly contractor measures (payment applications), commercial evaluations of project variations and contact and tender reviews. You’ll enhance your stakeholder engagement skills during commercial meetings with a wide variety of stakeholders. Whatever you’re doing, you’ll be helping us build a more resilient and sustainable network for our customers, communities and stakeholders.

What’s in it for you

Throughout your course you’ll see how your studies relate to significant project milestones, building the foundations of your career as a QS. Our four-year programme brings learning and earning together. Not only will you study towards a nationally recognised qualification, but you’ll also earn a competitive salary, develop new skills and gain invaluable knowledge and experience. With excellent training opportunities, varied career paths and secure employment, this programme will kick-start your career in an enduring industry, allowing you to set the foundations for your future.

As a Quantity Surveying Graduate / Degree Apprentice, you’ll enjoy a range of benefits including:

  • Starting salary of £20,000
  • A generous pension scheme where we’ll double match your contributions up to 10%
  • A broad range of flexible benefits including share incentive plans, employee discounts, charity-matched funding and many, many more.
  • On completion of your programme, you’ll continue your development and you’ll be ready to become a Graduate Quantity Surveyor, with a starting salary of £39,240.

What you’ll bring

If you live in Scotland, you’ll do a BSc (Hons) Graduate Apprenticeship Construction and Built Environment (Quantity Surveying) at Glasgow Caledonian University. You’ll have four Highers at grades A-C (or equivalent), with two of those at a minimum of a B. You’ll also have National 5 in English and Maths (or equivalent). We’re taking a hybrid approach to working with your time split between university, home and the office (either Glasgow or Cambuslang).
