Job description

We are hiring a Sub-Project Manager to join our RACER team at Nuclear Waste Services.

RACER ensures the Nuclear Waste Service site assets are renewed, refurbished, upgraded and improved where appropriate. Working closely with the Sites main stakeholders the Programme delivers Tasks and Projects ranging from £10k to £25 million and above. The Tasks and Projects could cover a wide range of complexity and can include study work through to significant design packages and construction of new plant or building.

As a Sub-Project Manager, you would be responsible for day-to-day management of Work Packages, low complexity Projects or parts of more complex Projects under the supervision of a Project Manager or Senior Project Manager.

  • Defining Project or team objectives, critical success factors, dependencies and constraints.
  • Consolidating and documenting the fundamental components of Projects or Work Packages (scope, schedule, resource requirements, budgets, risks, opportunities and issues, and quality requirements), ensuring that appropriate and robust Project controls are in place whilst talking into account safety and the environment.
  • Establishing and maintaining Project or team governance arrangements, defining clear roles, responsibilities and accountabilities.
  • Applying appropriate Project or Work Package management life cycles, processes, methods, techniques and tools, tailoring them to the specific needs of a Project.
  • Planning a Project or Work Package in sufficient detail to ensure integration of all activities, identification of dependencies, and understanding of critical paths and key milestones.
  • Preparing the Integrated Assurance and Approval Plans for a Project.
  • Managing the production of the required Deliverables, taking responsibility for overall progress and use of resources and initiating exceptions and taking corrective action where necessary.
  • Ensuring that quality activities relating to the Project or Work Package are planned and performed correctly and are within tolerance defined by the Plan.
  • Managing Project or team reviews at appropriate points throughout the Project or Work Package lifecycle which will inform governance decisions of projects by providing evaluations of progress, performance, risk, contingency, and continuing relevance.
  • Defining, producing, authorising and overseeing the management of Work Packages.
  • Identifying stakeholder expectations and managing them, taking account of their levels of influence and particular interests, establishing effective working relationships with them.
  • Actively identifying and managing threats and opportunities including instigating mitigation actions, identifying risk responses and contingency plans and managing then through to conclusion.
  • Recognising, anticipating, and managing dependencies between tasks, people, processes, and systems.
  • Reviewing changes for potential impact on the Project or Work Package Baseline and actively managing changes to Project delivery, scope and costs, updating plans and maintaining appropriate and detailed records.
  • Ensuring all necessary Project resources are identified and that justification for such resources is clear.
  • Ensuring that limited resources are managed effectively and efficiently, developing strategies to address gaps.
  • Ensuring that a comprehensive Project or Work Package budget is prepared, reflecting the plan and all resource needs.
  • Managing the integration of Project or Work Package outputs into business-as-usual, addressing the readiness of users, compatibility of work systems and the realisation of benefits.
  • Ensuring a smooth hand-over to the operational team and any other supporting functions identified.
  • Evaluating the success of the Project or Work Package against its Baseline and sharing lessons or best practice with the P3M community and business functions.


Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Hold or currently working towards APM (Association of Project Management)
  • Relevant experience in a similar role
  • Experience and knowledge of E&I projects
  • Experience in Portfolio, Programme and Project Management (P3M) disciplines would be advantageous

Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) is a joint trading name of LLW Repository Limited and Radioactive Waste Management Limited.
This role will be employed by LLW Repository Limited unless the successful candidate is currently on Radioactive Waste Management Limited terms and conditions. In this situation the employee will continue on their current terms and conditions.
