Job Description
We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcherto perform laboratory experiments to elucidate the chemistry of actinides and other radioisotopes (e.g. radium). You will investigate radionuclide interactions at mineral-water interfaces, develop novel radionuclide separation schemes, and advance our understanding of their fundamental chemistry. This will be achieved through a combination of wet chemistry conducted in the Seaborg Institute radiochemistry laboratories and spectroscopy conducted across a number of state-of-the-art facilities at LLNL. This position is in the Environmental Isotope Systems group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.
You will

  • Perform sorption/desorption experiments with radioisotopes (natural or synthetic) and minerals/rock systems.
  • Study surface processes between radioisotopes and minerals (sorption and desorption processes) using counting and mass spectrometry techniques.
  • Develop workflows to synthesize novel compounds containing radioactive elements (natural or synthetic).
  • Use and learn a wide range of spectroscopic and separation techniques including absorbance and emission spectroscopies, Raman, Infrared, X-Ray diffraction, etc. to determine speciation and bonding of radionuclides in water-mineral system and solid phases.
  • Design and conduct research, pioneer experimental methodologies, interpret complex data, and be responsible for presenting results.
  • Communicate effectively (verbally and written) in a multidisciplinary team environment and collaborate with external research partners.
  • Author technical and scientific reports and publications and deliver scientific presentations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • PhD in chemistry, radiochemistry, geochemistry, or related field(s).
  • Ability to work safely with various radioactive isotopes.
  • Experience with operating a wide range of sample characterization tools (LSC, XRD, Raman, absorbance, fluorescence...).
  • Analytical chemistry sample preparation, such as column chemistry, chromatography, etc.
  • Proficient interpersonal skills necessary to interact professionally and productively with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.
  • Ability to develop independent research projects.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills evidenced by published works and presentations.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience in environmental radiochemistry research.
  • Prior experience with synthesis of actinide compounds and their characterization.
  • Familiar with molecular spectroscopy techniques.

Additional Information
All your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.
Position Information
This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years, open to those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
