Job description

Location: Neville Hill Train Depot Leeds
Are you ready to help shape our future? An Engineering Apprenticeship could be just 'Your Thing'?
We are looking for new and potential talent to join our engineering maintenance teams as a Rail Engineering Apprentice. If you’re great at problem solving, have a questioning mind and enjoy working in a supportive team environment, then this could be the career for you.
About the role
On our four-year Rail Engineering Apprentice programme, we’ve partnered with Myerscough College in Preston and NTAR to deliver a programme that offers you the opportunity to earn as you learn and achieve a Level 3 qualification, in Rail Engineering Technician on Traction and Rolling Stock. Myerscough College offers a space to study, mix with your fellow apprentices but also a place for you to relax and unwind with onsite facilities, a local shop and public transport to local Market Town and Preston City Centre.
During the Apprenticeship we’ll equip you with all the technical knowledge and hands on experience that you’ll need, to take your first steps into an exciting and evolving career. Our in-house Engineering Apprenticeship Manager and our Apprentice Trainers will be your mentors and coaches from the minute you join us and throughout your apprenticeship, but you need to have a passion for engineering and a willingness to learn.
What do the 4 years look like:
Year One/Year Two – Both of these years you’ll spend 3 half terms living and studying in Myerscough College, where you’ll work on your Level 2 qualification in a classroom-based environment. When you’re not at College, you’ll be at your respective TrainCare Centre, following a guided learning path with your Apprentice Trainer.
Year Three – Whilst working alongside your team at your TrainCare Centre, you’ll work hands-on and learn from our dedicated trainers and your peers. This will help you build on your knowledge and give you practical experience whilst creating your portfolio of evidence, ready to submit your paperwork for the End Point Assessment.
Year Four – You’ll continue working alongside your team at your TrainCare centre in form of extra modules in electrics/electronics, fault diagnosis and developmental courses, expanding on your knowledge and skillsets gained in the previous 3 years.
On completion of your Apprenticeship, you’ll be qualified with the necessary experience under your belt to be able to apply for a variety of different roles. You could be a Maintenance Engineer with potential to then move on to be a Team Leader or Technical Engineer. Alternatively, you could move around - from Production to Safety – the opportunities within Northern are vast. There will be opportunities at the end of your apprenticeship to apply for permanent positions and most of our apprentices choose to stay with Northern and are now enjoying rewarding careers across many areas of the business.
About you:
We’re looking for people with a keen interest, in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and a strong desire to work hard to achieve success. We expect you to be passionate about your future career and be happy to carry on learning – our Apprenticeship Scheme takes dedication, enthusiasm, and personal commitment to complete your assignments.
Because our programme is challenging yet rewarding, you’ll also need a minimum of 5 GCSEs with (gained or predicted) grades A to C or 9 to 5 including Maths, English, Science and any 2 others. If you have any Engineering qualifications, please provide as much information as possible on this qualification in your application, for example level, key modules and grades.
We’re also looking for the following:
Someone who is dedicated and committed to the 4 year programme
Willing to play an active part of your own training and development
Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to liaise and work effectively with colleagues
Inquisitive minded people, who like to understand how things work
Someone who can work as part of a team
Able to follow instructions/rules and regulations, to ensure all maintenance is carried out in a safe manner.
And don’t forget that our selection process includes a safety critical medical assessment, that covers general health, ECG, vision, hearing, colour vision and drugs and alcohol testing, so there are some essential requirements for you to meet:
You must live within a 60-minute drive of your Home Depot – as our engineering teamwork different shift patterns that can often involve working days, weekends, and nights
Not have defective colour vision
Be at least 15 when you apply, but 16 minimum by 01/09/2024
Our Benefits:
Free Travel on Northern services - everyone who works at Northern, plus their partners/spouses and dependants, can travel for free right across our full network of services. *Certain eligibility criteria will apply.
75% discount with other Train Operating Companies - after 2 years with us, you’ll also get discounted travel on many other rail services in the UK and Europe.
