Job description

Summary

As a Ranger, you’re the heart and soul of the National Trust in the landscapes we protect. You’re a champion of nature conservation and the great outdoors, and you’ll play a crucial role in keeping the nation’s beloved countryside and coast in good shape, for wildlife and for people.

You should be willing to work some weekends, bank holidays and evenings, and be on call.

What it's like to work here

West Cornwall is a portfolio of diverse properties in the far west of the county. From industrial mining sites to formal gardens, ancient estates to beautiful beaches and soaring granite cliffs it has a strong, individual identity. On the moors of West Penwith the signs of history are everywhere in an archaeologically rich landscape. Farming is important and we work with tenant farmers as our partners. We also care for a significant residential let estate and look after landscapes loved by many. We’re a busy and creative team and we work hard for places we care about. Whether it’s conservation work to our properties, or engaging people with special places, we’re proud to make a difference.

The countryside team is based close to the Count House at Botallack (near St Just), set in an impressive landscape of engine houses and other historic mining structures, against a stunning backdrop of cliffs and sea.

What you'll be doing

You’ll be helping to protect and care for habitats, wildlife, livestock, buildings and machinery. You’ll pass on your knowledge and enthusiasm to encourage others to love this area as much as you do. Whenever and wherever you come across people, you’ll take the time to talk to them and answer their questions, rather than rushing away to the next task.

You’ll make sure that the conservation work and outdoor experiences on the land in your care are of the highest standard. You’ll build relationships in the local community, proudly representing the Trust and letting people know about the work you and the team are doing.

Examples of work include;

Access - cutting back vegetation from footpaths in summer, maintaining/repairing stiles and bridges, maintaining ditches and drainage and constructing steps

Presentation - installing and maintaining signage and keeping sites tidy

Archaeology - cutting back encroaching vegetation from monuments

Safety - installing barriers and signage

Nature - controlling bracken, cutting back scrub, removing invasive plant species, installing fencing and gates and pony checking/transportation

Whilst one vacancy is full time until 31st March 2026, the other vacancy is 22.5 hours per week for a 5 month fixed term. Interviews will take place on the 2nd May.

  • practically experienced in conservation work, to protect and improve habitats and landscapes
  • happy to talk to all kinds of people about the work you’re doing, and why it matters
  • hard-working and willing to learn
  • able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines
  • experienced in managing land, access and conservation, and working outdoors
  • able to use machinery and equipment, with relevant certificates
  • a driver with a full UK driving licence
