Job description

The role Research Associate in High-Performance Computing research group at the University of Bristol. The position is associated with the EPSRC-funded ASiMoV prosperity partnership project. ASiMoV is an exciting collaboration between Rolls-Royce and the universities of Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford and Warwick. ASiMoV’s world-leading ambition is to enable, for the first time, fully virtual, simulation-based jet engine design, at high enough fidelity to enable virtual certification before production. This is an extremely exciting and challenging computational goal, which we expect to require Exascale levels of performance to achieve. Meeting these goals will also require multiple breakthroughs in multi-physics solvers, algorithms, mini-apps, code generation, optimisation, scientific software and computer architecture. ASiMoV will rely on exploiting future computer architectures in order to deliver the performance required within realistic monetary and power budgets. The Bristol HPC research group is an internationally leading team, with award-winning research into challenges such as performance portability, parallel programming languages, and advanced computer architectures. We collaborate with exciting academic and industrial partners around the world. What will you be doing? Based in the Computer Science department, you will carry out research focusing on developing the SimEng fast cycle-level processor simulator, to enable design space exploration of future architectures. This role will also explore emerging architectures such as GPUs from NVIDIA, AMD and Intel, ray-tracing hardware as potential accelerators for particle tracking within combustion simulation, and the latest vector and matrix engines being added to CPUs from Intel and Arm. You should apply if You will have a background in High Performance Computing, with demonstrable experience in the development of advanced computer architectures. The ideal candidates would have a strong track record of publications in international-quality venues such as IJHPCA, IPDPS, HPCA, IEEE/ACM SuperComputing, ISC etc. In addition, you will have excellent written and spoken communication skills including the ability to explain and share deep concepts. Applicants are required to have at least a Masters degree in Computer Science or a closely related area. PhDs are preferred but not essential. Additional information For informal queries please contact Simon McIntosh-Smith, S.McIntosh-Smith@bristol.ac.uk. To find out more about what it's like to work in the Faculty of Engineering, and how the Faculty supports people to achieve their potential, please see our staff blog: https://engineeringincludesme.blogs.bristol.ac.uk/ Interviews are anticipated to be held on 19 April 2024. Our strategy and mission We recently launched our strategy to 2030 tying together our mission, vision and values.
