This position is for research within RAICo1, a joint initiative developed by Sellafield Ltd and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) in collaboration with the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and the University of Manchester. In Whitehaven, West Cumbria, RAICo1 is the first of a network of robotics and artificial intelligence hubs across the UK.
Size reduction of existing radioactive waste is paramount for its relocation and safe storage in modern nuclear facilities. Due to the intrinsic hazard of such handled materials, robots are usually employed to move humans away from harm. Nonetheless, cutting material into smaller parts is usually time and labour-intensive. It requires engineers to define the sequence of cutting paths, program the robot to execute that sequence, and manually update the CAD models of the material being cut.
This project will develop an automatic planner to generate the cutting sequence and the collision-free paths, enabling manipulator robots to laser cut skips (containers) with minimum human intervention, reduced time, and increased reliability and flexibility. The outcomes of this research will be a stepping stone for future developments of fully autonomous robots for remote handling and size reduction.
Successful candidates must fulfil the essential criteria described in the further particulars document (see link at the bottom of this page). They will be experts in some of the following areas: robot modelling and control, robot path planning, manipulation planning, robot manipulation, and/or robot task planning.
