Job description

The successful candidate will be part of a supportive and community-oriented department that has a strong commitment to upholding our core values (embracing diversity, making a positive difference, environmental sustainability, being friendly and helpful, and always learning). Our department is highly integrated within an exciting array of environmental sustainability endeavours at our university, such as the Environmental Sustainability Academy at York and the Stockholm Environmental Institute (York), providing many opportunities for interdisciplinary working and networking across the university and beyond. The department is proud to hold an Athena Swan Silver Award.

Role

The role will involve supporting the EOCROP Research Project to assess the feasibility of using earth observation (EO) satellite data to parameterise crop models for use across broad and geographically diverse regions. This would see a step change in our ability to apply crop models for management solutions at scale. You will gain experience in using 3 different crop models (DO3SE-Crop, APSIM and WOFOST) and parameterising and evaluating these crop models using both field data (collected from sites across the UK and Australia) and EO data collected by colleagues at the University of Southampton. The crop models will be applied to develop sustainable crop management approaches to nitrogen use efficiency and ultimately to assess the feasibility of using EO parameterised crop models to develop sustainable crop management approaches to support progress towards net zero GHG emissions.

You will work closely with a group of software developers, research technicians and PhD students in a mutually supportive environment within the Environmental & Geography Dept. The EOCROP project comprises an international consortium of field data analysis experts (in the UK (Aganlyst) and Australia (University of Sydney)), experts in processing space-based EO data at the University of Southampton and experts in developing and applying crop models within both the Environment and Geography Dept. of the UoYork and at CSIRO in Australia. You will be line managed by Prof. Lisa Emberson who leads research on the development and application of the DO3SE-Crop model.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed:

  • PhD in environmental science or equivalent experience;
  • Knowledge of crop or vegetation modelling to engage in high quality research;
  • Good quantitative skills;
  • Experience in the development, calibration, evaluation or application of crop or vegetation models.
