Job description

The role Dynamic stall occurs in various applications involving rotating blades. This can lead to increased load & noise. You will be joining a world-leading team working on aerodynamics and aeroacoustics of dynamic stall. The team consists of experts from the University of Bristol, University of Cambridge and Queen Mary University of London, as well as several industrial partners. At the University of Bristol, you will become a member of a large group of highly motivated researchers, with a research focus of aerodynamics and aeroacoustics and development of new measurement tools. University of Bristol is home to the UK’s National Aeroacoustic Facility, National Boundary Layer Facility and National Pressure Neutral Acoustic Wind tunnel, and by joining the team you will have access to our state-of-the-art experimental facilities. What will you be doing? You will be responsible for performing aerodynamic & aeroacoustic tests on pitching aerofoils. As part of this project, you will make use of our national wind tunnel facilities to carry our research on different types of high-instrumented aerofoils, pitching at different rates and in-flow conditions. You will be using different flow measurement techniques, e.g. hotwire, PIV, remote sensing, etc, to characterise the flow field. You will be using our large microphone arrays and beamforming arrays to characterise the noise from pitching aerofoils. You will also be collaborating with our partners at the Queen Mary University of London on their CFD tasks and the University of Cambridge for development of new analytical prediction tools. The work proposed here is very novel and its results are expected to be published in the field’s top journals. The project provides an opportunity to work on a fundamental, but also industrially important problem, & collaborate with world-leading academics in the field. You will be able to attend several international conferences to present your results. As well as carrying the research defined in the EPSRC project to the highest standards, the successful applicant will be expected to work as part of a team and to prepare reports and presentations for project meetings and publications for international journals. You should apply if You: have (or are working towards) a postgraduate research degree (or equivalent professional qualification) in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering/a subject in a related field or you have significant professional experience in the area required have research experience in experimental aerodynamics & aerodynamics measurements Have experience of programming in Matlab or using a similar programming language The grade offered to the successful candidate (I or J) will depend on their skills & experience. Please see the attached Job Description for more details. Additional information For informal queries please contact Professor Mahdi Azarpeyvand, m.azarpeyvand@bristol.ac.uk. Interviews are anticipated to be held at the end of February. A scheduled interview date will be confirmed in due course, and the advert will be updated accordingly. Our strategy and mission We recently launched our strategy to 2030 tying together our mission, vision and values. The University of Bristol aims to be a place where everyone feels able to be themselves and do their best in an inclusive working environment where all colleagues can thrive and reach their full potential. We want to attract, develop, and retain individuals with different experiences, backgrounds & perspectives – particularly people of colour, LGBT+ and disabled people - because diversity of people and ideas remains integral to our excellence as a global civic institution.
