The University of Exeter is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of research-intensive universities and in the top 150 universities in the world (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022 and QS World University Ranking 2022). We have recently opened a number of new and exciting opportunities in our IT and Digital function.

The university is developing a new ten-year strategy where digital ways of working will be central to delivering our vision and goals. The digital transformation will impact profoundly on our workplace design, the skills we develop, the way our students learn, and the way we work and collaborate, and we want to ensure that this transformation has our staff and students at its heart. We are investing in digital technology and skills development to strengthen our education, research, and partnerships, and to meet the needs of our community.

Exeter IT & Digital is central to all of this, and we are looking for people to join us who want to be part of this major transformation and part of changing the way we work and the way our students learn.

  • Multiple wellbeing and health initiatives for staff
  • Sustainability and the environment being at the heart of what we do
  • Beautiful campus environment when working from either Exeter or Penryn
  • Inspiring research that really makes a difference to the world

The role

The Research IT team is part of IT Services and this is an exciting opportunity to be part of that team. The Research IT team support researchers with all their IT requirements, from bespoke hardware, support on high-performance compute (HPC) to software development, working alongside the wider Exeter IT department.

Following a recent investment, we are hoping to recruit a small team to support researchers working on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Maths of AI, Machine Learning, Data Science, and their applications. These new posts will come with a range of experience and expertise, and we will seek to build a strong and diverse team of individuals able to achieve great things together and with colleagues in other fields within and outside the university. Good communication skills will play a vital role in liaising effectively with colleagues elsewhere in the University to ensure the delivery of a high-quality service to end-users.

In this position of Research IT ADA Team Leader, you will have lead responsibility for engaging with the research and specialist teaching academic community across the University to identify and provide specialist, bespoke and original IT and digital support, leveraging the community of specialist support to deliver locally. You will be working collaboratively with the Strategy & Architecture and the Service Management teams to ensure specialist IT support is delivered effectively whilst balancing the needs of clients with the standards and expectations of the IT Service.

You will build, facilitate and develop strong ongoing relationships and work closely with a number of research and teaching disciplines, and act as the central liaison point for sign-posting where support can be best provided to maximise client satisfaction.

The successful candidate will have a degree in relevant academic area or equivalent and experience of leading technical teams. Applicants will ideally have experience of Windows, macOS and Linux administration, and experience of supporting a range of hardware from laptops through to rack mounted servers and storage. You will also ideally have experience of working with high-performance computing (HPC) environments and administering complex cloud-based infrastructures. Knowledge and experience of machine learning or artificial intelligence research pipelines, would be an advantage, as would other experience enabling the candidates to contribute to research.

Please ensure you read the Job Description and Person Specification for full details of this role.

We will be reviewing applications as they come in, so please don’t hesitate in applying, as we reserve the right to close this vacancy early if we receive sufficient applications.

Are you convinced, but don't find you 100 percent fit the profile? Feel free to send us your application anyway! We look forward to growing with you!
