Job description

The Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Lab Manager to maintain and manage its three research laboratories (psycholinguistics, phonetics, and computational linguistics), to join us from March 2024 in this permanent full- or part-time role. Responsible for maintaining and developing the labs, the role holder will also train researchers and students in the use of equipment for Linguistic experiments and data analysis, such as EEG, audio and video recording.

A busy and complex institution, the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics is a world-leading centre for teaching and research in language and linguistics comprising of six Sections: French, German, Italian, Slavonic Studies, Spanish & Portuguese, and Theoretical & Applied Linguistics. With nearly 1,000 students (around 750 undergraduates, 70 MPhil students and 185 PhD students), the Faculty is home to around 140 academic, research, and professional services staff based on the University's Sidgwick Site, a short walk from the centre of Cambridge

This is an exciting opportunity for early career researchers as well as more experienced laboratory staff. The successful candidate will work closely with academic staff in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, IT and Professional Services staff across the Faculty. The role holder will provide management of the research laboratories and specialist technical support to staff and students to enable the successful operation of research projects and research-related teaching.

Main duties will include:

  • Train staff and students in use of software and equipment
  • Manage lab budgets, equipment, consumables and bookings
  • Coordinate participant recruitment processes and systems
  • Set up and maintain lab-related web portals
  • Contribute to outreach
  • Act as lab safety officer
  • Ensure lab work is in line with good research practice and integrity policies
