At Cancer Research UK, we exist to beat cancer

We are professionals with purpose, beating cancer every day. But we need to go much further and much faster. That's why we we're looking for someone talented, someone innovative and ambitious, someone like you.

About the team

Here at Cancer Research UK, children's and young people's (CYP) cancer is a priority area of focus with a dedicated strategy to address the unique challenges holding back progress.

The children's and young people's strategy aims to improve survival and long-term quality of life for all children and young people affected by cancer. Achieving this will be crucial to our organisational vision of bringing about a world where everybody can lead longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer.

The Children's and Young People's team is responsible for developing and delivering this strategy, coordinating cross-organisational activities and ensuring our strategic objectives are met.

This is a unique opportunity, at an exciting time, to play an integral part of the team as we grow our ambition and drive transformational change for children and young people affected by cancer.

What will you be doing?

As a Programme Manager within the team, you will have responsibility for a range of activities; including delivering a programme of initiatives, building and managing key stakeholder relationships, and developing and/or driving new scientific and partnership strategies.

We are hiring for two roles, one with initial focus on science and research landscaping, and the other on partnership and engagement activities.

Key accountabilities:

  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, identifying opportunities and areas of need to further our organisational activity for CYP research.
  • Manage and drive key strategic programmes of activity involved in the delivery of the children's and young people's strategy, taking initiatives from concept to delivery and implementation across the relevant areas of the portfolio, eg. CYP data programme and event series.
  • Actively drive or contribute to cross organisational working groups, influencing in a matrix fashion, to support coordination and delivery of CYP activity.
  • Gain a thorough understanding of the children's and young people's cancer research, partnership and funding landscape, gathering insights from strategic analysis, and driving the development and delivery of renewed strategies.
  • Keeping up-to-date on the children's and young people's cancer landscape in CRUK and beyond, to contribute to in-house expertise on CYP cancer both internally and externally.
  • Actively engage and consult patients and parents/carers affected by children's and young people's cancers, including our CYP Patient Insights Panel, to ensure appropriate influence of those with lived experience in shaping our work.
  • Confidently represent CRUK and our CYP work nationally and internationally.

What skills are we looking for?

  • Strong science background in a relevant subject, preferably with a postgraduate qualification or equivalent work experience, ideally in field of children's and young people's cancers.
  • Significant research or research-related experience, for example in an academic, NHS, industrial research and/or research funding/management.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the research landscape, its challenges and opportunities.
  • Experience of developing and delivering strategies, ability to spot opportunities and translate these into operational plans, thinking beyond the immediate issue to look at broader topics or themes.
  • Proven ability of planning, managing and delivering projects; ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks, showing adaptability to meet challenging targets and deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills, with experience of building and managing relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, at all levels of seniority.
  • Ability to influence effectively at all levels; judging situations and acting diplomatically, as required.
  • A commitment to accuracy and attention to detail, with demonstrable analytical and problem-solving skills, and ability to communicate to great effect
  • Comfortable with building something new and an ability to manage ambiguity
  • Takes the initiative and sees projects through to completion, driving excellent standards.
  • Able to work well independently and with minimal supervision. Good judgement on when and how to involve key stakeholders in issues
  • Willingness to travel within the UK, and internationally, as required

What will I gain?

Each and every one of our employees contributes to our progress and is supporting our work to beat cancer. We think that's impressive.

In return, we make sure you are supported by a generous benefits package, a wide range of career and personal development opportunities and high-quality tools, policies and processes to enable you to do your job well.

Our benefits package includes a substantial retirement plan, a generous and flexible leave allowance, discounts on anything from travel to technology, gym membership, and much more.

We review pay annually and aim to recognise individual performance and achievements.

We don't forget people have lives outside of work too and so we actively encourage a flexible working culture.

Our work - from funding cutting-edge research to developing public policy - will change the world. It's exciting to be part of our team.

How do I apply?
