Research Scientist - Metals Industry

Reed Scientific are recruiting for a full-time Research Scientist with experience in technology development in the Metals Industry. Our client represents global miners, smelters and recyclers. 

This role will initially be based on site, but can then progress into a hybrid / remote role. 

This is a great opportunity to join a small, agile team to build new technology spaces and projects around this unique metal.
The role

In this role, the Research Scientist will support the industry in showcasing what this particular metal can do, building technical and commercial networks and initiating projects. The Research Scientist will carry out desk research, horizon scanning, networking and coordination to expand the teams knowledge base, accelerate industry investment and boost R&D.

You will help to achieve strategic goals, including: 

• Accelerate implementation of emerging uses of this metal in green energy technologies
• Expand recovery from secondary feedstocks especially including e-waste
• Explore technology routes to low-carbon tin production

Responsibilities and duties

• Engage with industry stakeholders and the R&D community globally to understand and prioritise topics, projects and experts most likely to impact this metal
• Use digital technologies including AI to research and create knowledge spaces, including a mentored deep dive into the company archives
• Work with agencies to launch an online showcase to demonstrate what the metal can do, highlight leading research and attract investors
• Grow real-world networks, including events, social media, research clusters and investor forums to broker and accelerate new research and startups
• Identify and initiate new project opportunities to exploit technologies

Essential Qualifications and Skills required

• The ideal candidate will have graduated preferably in chemistry or materials science but otherwise in related disciplines with a minimum 2:1 and preferably also a PhD in a relevant field
• At least three years’ experience in technology development, ideally in the metals space.
• Experience in global information collation tasks including online curation, database research as well as identifying, calling/visiting, and interviewing stakeholders directly.
• Skilled in managing, analysing and presenting R&D information preferably directly to a commercial or investor audience, including digital and online outputs
• Experienced in R&D portfolio management, project management and research funding principles, preferably with some relevant training
• Willing to travel internationally, including CEO level meetings and lab visits.

Desirable experience and skills

• Knowledge and interest in global technology trends for energy, recycling & low-carbon extraction
• Interest and preferably ability in accelerating or automating knowledge workflow including AI tools.
• Experience in making and publishing digital media including videos, websites and social media

Salary: £45k - £50k p/annum
