Position: Resident Doctor Oncology

Location: Leaders in Oncology Care, 95-97 Harley Street LOC, London W1G 6AF.

Contract Type: Full time (FTE) or Part Time, with a range of flexible shifts (Monday-Friday: operational hours mostly 8-6pm or 10 – 8pm). Rotas allow for adaptable part-time contractual commitments. Shifts are 12 or 24-hour and can be arranged to be block booked if required to fit around outside commitments.

This could be to help steer the services you deliver, speaking up or patient satisfaction focus groups, clinical governance or MDT meetings.

About the role:

Your role as a Clinical Fellow/Specialty Registrar is vital to the fantastic work achieved by our colleagues, and you will provide medical cover to the outpatient chemotherapy day unit.

This includes attending to oncology and haematology patients new to the treatment suite, those requiring a medical review, and clerking unplanned admissions from the CDU. You will also be responsible for checking outpatient prescriptions and protocols and approving medication. You will establish great relationships with a large pool of outpatients, as well as work closely with world-renowned experts within the medical field.

The outpatient chemotherapy day unit is open Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm, (subject to change for some sites). Medical cover by a resident is currently provided for 8 hours during this time however hours and start times can be flexible and are open for discussion.

Clinical Duties and Responsibilities:

This is a Clinical Fellow/Specialty Registrar level role to cover; LOC (Leaders in Oncology Care) part of HCA Healthcare. You will be covering in-patient and out-patient Chemotherapy/Oncology/end of Life care units.

  • You will fully assist the consultants and specialist nursing staff to ensure a high standard of patient care is delivered, to ensure that any changes to the medical management plan for a patient, as agreed with their named consultant, are communicated immediately to the nurse in charge and relevant members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Supporting new admissions to the unit as soon as is reasonably possible, Clerking patients and new drug charts and informing the named consultant of the patient’s arrival.
  • To accompany consultants on ward rounds of their patients, at their request.
  • To perform routine basic clinical skills for inpatients as required, i.e. venepuncture, drawing blood cultures, peripheral IV cannulation, arterial and venous blood gas sampling, tube insertions and urethral catheter insertion, and support nursing staff undergoing training to develop and perform these clinical skills independently.
  • You will have the opportunity to take part in audits, education of the MDT, education and training to continuously improve and strive for excellence, for staff and patients.
  • Responsible for consenting patients for procedures and treatments.

What we look for in a suitable candidate:

  • MBBS medical qualification
  • An additional post-graduate qualification FRCA/ FICM/ MRCEM/MRCP or equivalent is desirable
  • Doctors must be the equivalent level of ST3 and/or above
  • Fully registered with the GMC and current licence to practice.
  • Must be ALS trained (we can arrange training if needed)
  • Good interpersonal skills with an ability to work co-operatively in a multidisciplinary setting
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment & on own initiative.
  • NHS training programme in Oncology is desirable.
  • Chemotherapy/Oncology/end of Life care patient experience within in-patient/outpatient settings is desirable
