Job description

We are looking for a practically capable, enthusiastic, and motivated individual who has a passion for regenerating land for wildlife. Your role will focus on land-based management, including rewilding, traditional nature conservation, grazing livestock and some amenity land work where needed for our programmes.

There will be a modest amount of administration work to enable the practical delivery such as risk assessments, emails to volunteers and team members, record keeping and submitting grant claim forms, so we also need someone with a basic level of computer literacy who is willing to engage in this type of admin in small, but regular, slots during their week.

You will also be involved in managing weekly volunteers, carrying out survey and monitoring and working on some of our rewilding courses and programmes so we are looking for someone who can relate to others, guide them, motivate people to try new skills, plan and prioritise tasks and adapt to weather and changing circumstances.

Sometimes things come up that we had not expected. We are looking for someone who is willing to be part of a dedicated team at Embercombe who will help resolve and learn from such times.

About The Role

We have secured a Countryside Stewardship agreement to deliver the most significant level of capital works on site in over a decade. This role is to lead on the delivery of the agreement, including the administration, under the guidance of our experienced Rewilding Manager.

We have recently completed two successful land-based community engagement projects and have several people who have been volunteering with us and who wish to continue. This role will be responsible for establishing and running a regular volunteer team who will assist with the practical works on the land, including the CS agreement works.

We have also established regular biodiversity monitoring and surveying of our wildland. This role will help us continue this work as well as expand the areas where we can gain important data about our rewilding work. This will be through both the successful candidate and volunteers carrying out monitoring.

We run successful rewilding programmes and courses, as well as day visits by groups, universities, colleges, and organisations. This role will have the opportunity to be involved in helping to deliver some of these courses and programmes.

We have a lot of land to look after! A small part of this role will support the Site Team in getting some of the day-to-day land-based tasks done, such as amenity mowing and tending our ‘People Zones’ so that we have a nice, safe space for our participants and maintaining the medicine garden. You may also be called upon to support the Site Manager when emergency/urgent issues that arise (particularly out of hours).

You will become part of our team of on-site first aiders and fire wardens, after the appropriate training.

What We Are Offering

  • A 3-year, fixed-term contract
  • Salary of £21K plus basic on-site accommodation
  • Company pension enrolment
  • Flexible hours
  • The opportunity to work with a small, passionate, dedicated team
  • Beautiful work location!
  • Discounted meals from our plant-based, organic kitchen (during our catered programmes only)
  • Free/Discounted place on an Embercombe programme (after 6 months in post)
  • Space to develop the role
  • The opportunity for training and mentorship
