Job Title: Roadworker

Salary: £23,151.48 - £23,892.96

Hours: 37 

Contract: Permanent 

We are looking for an experienced reliable and enthusiastic Roadworker to assist in the construction and maintenance of the public highway within Leeds City council Highways Services Department.

You will work as part of a team carrying out a wide range highway works including reconstruction of roads and footways, minor drainage works and general maintenance repairs. 

You will be expected to have the ability to read and understand construction drawings and statutory undertaker’s plans and be able to demonstrate an understanding of health and safety requirements. 

A key part of the Road workers role is assisting in laying of pcc and natural stone products, Placing, Spreading and compaction of granular and bituminous materials, Mixing and placing concrete. Excavation operations both by hand and supervision of machine excavations. You will also be required to operate items of small plant, such as cut-off saws, vibrating plates, rollers, compressors and assist the team in all aspects of on-site works.

It is desirable you hold a NVQ Level II or equivalent in a construction related discipline and have current NRASWA accreditation.

A full driving licence (category B, B+E  licence preferred). 

You must have experience of highway work, be reliable, enthusiastic and able to use your own initiative. Note that duties for this post include a substantial amount of manual tasks such as bending, lifting, pushing and pulling, in all weather conditions.

You may be required to assist with Emergency and Winter maintenance operations as appropriate

Job Description

Job Purpose:

To assist in the construction and maintenance of highways including footways, carriageways, kerbing, flagging and drainage works.

Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of team delivering quality highway maintenance works in a safe and efficient manner
  • Placing, spreading and compaction of granular and bituminous materials.
  • Mixing and placing concrete.
  • Excavation operations both by hand and supervision of machine excavations.
  • Assisting with traffic management measures.
  • Assisting with laying of kerbs, edging, flags and block paving.
  • Assisting in the laying and construction of highway drainage works.
  • Wearing of personal protective equipment.
  • Operating of small plant including, rollers, vibrating plates, compressors, road saws, strimmers etc.
  • Assist with winter maintenance operations as appropriate.
  • Comply with Standing Orders, Financial Regulations, Quality Assurance procedures and Health and Safety Regulations.
  • Abide by the Council’s Equal Opportunities Policy in the duties of the post and as an employee of the Council.

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level II or equivalent in a construction related discipline (desirable)
  • Current Driving Licence. (desirable)

Essential requirements It is essential that the candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post. Candidates will only be shortlisted for interview if they can demonstrate that they meet all the essential requirements.

  • Able to carry out heavy manual work.
  • Able to assist with laying kerbs, flags and block paving.
  • Able to operate small plant/rollers etc.
  • Able to work as part of a team.
  • Experience of working in adverse weather conditions.
  • Able to communicate verbally in a polite manner.
  • Knowledge of construction materials.
  • Possession of a current driving licence.
  • Experience of general highway construction techniques.

  • NVQ Level II (or similar) in a construction related discipline.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety Regulations particularly with reference to highway work.
  • Experience of working on a live highway
