Job description

Job Title: Safety, Health and Environment Officer
Location: Plymouth, Devon
Compensation: Competitive + Benefits
Role Type: Full time / Permanent
Role ID: SF54102

At Babcock we're working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a Safety, Health and Environment Officer at HMNB Devonport, Plymouth.
The role
As a Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Officer you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. Devonport Royal Dockyard seeks to achieve and maintain the highest standards in the management of health, safety and the environment in all its operations, and as the SHE Officer you'll be critical in ensuring we meet our ambitions.
Day to day, you'll assist in the formulation of a compliance inspection regime as well as lead or partake in scheduled and unscheduled inspections and audits against our SHE Management System and other documented arrangements to ensure our operations are compliant.
  • You will at times be auditing our documented arrangements against set standards, but also at times viewing operations from end to end. This might include viewing documents for the planning of a task, the Safe System of Work (SSoW), the pre-job brief delivery and the execution of the task on location. Potentially in enclosed or confined spaces.
  • You will complete reports to a professional standard, which identify findings that are evidentially supported.
  • We are a department which enables compliance and the adoption of best practice. We are a supporting function to the operational elements of the business and not solely an assurance function.

This role is on a full time, permanent basis and will be based at the Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth. The role will also require some night working although infrequent.
Agile working may be available to employees in some instances, applying the principles of fairness and consistency whilst ensuring that the overriding business needs can be appropriately met. We are happy to consider flexible, blended working, including part-time, condensed hours, and job sharing. Please ask about alternative patterns of work at interview.
Essential experience of the Safety, Health and Environment Officer:
  • You must be an Auditor or SHE professional who has worked with Health, Safety and Environmental Management Systems in the past.
  • You must have excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • You should be self-motivated and be comfortable taking the lead on work packages as part of a small team. Equally, you should be comfortable, at times working in isolation.
  • You must be comfortable communicating and presenting through a range of mediums with both internal and external parties, occasionally under challenging circumstances.

Qualifications for the Safety, Health and Environment Officer:
  • You should have a level 3 SHE qualification (or working towards) and / or an internal audit qualification for ISO45001 or ISO14001.

The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance for this role.
Our Benefits
  • Generous holiday allowance
  • Contributory Pension scheme, with life assurance
  • Employee share scheme
  • Employee shopping savings portal
  • Payment of Professional Fees
  • Reservists in the armed forces receive 10-days special paid leave
  • Holiday Trading is a benefit that allows most employees to buy additional leave or to sell up to one working week of annual leave from their annual entitlement
  • 'Be Kind Day' enables employees to take one working day's paid leave a year (or equivalent hours) to undertake volunteering work with their chosen organisation or registered charity
