Safety & Reliability Engineer

Aerospace

Wolverhampton (Hybrid at least 3 days on site)

Our client, a leading Aerospace company, are looking for a Safety & Reliability Engineer to join their team on a permanent basis. The company is a global leader in the design, manufacture and support of actuation systems for large commercial, regional and business aircrafts. Hybrid working is available.

Role summary:

  • Responsible for ensuring that the engineering design meets the reliability, maintainability and safety requirements in the most effective and efficient manner.
  • To get involved with reliability and safety engineering within a multi-disciplinary project team.

Principle Accountabilities:

The Safety & Reliability Engineer is responsible for providing expert engineering support to the Value Stream; working with hydromechanical and electromechanical drive systems, including electronic controllers. This includes working as part of a multifunction project team to develop the system and product designs to achieve the optimum balance of reliability and safety with other design parameters.

Major responsibilities shall include:

  • Getting involved with interpreting, organising, executing and coordinating milestones and document deliverables and delivering on time in full
  • Actively engage in the activity of providing an input to the project team to optimise both the system and product design with respect to Safety and Reliability including the provision of trade study data
  • Work closely with the Systems Engineering Lead to develop new and novel system architectures which demonstrate compliance with Safety and Certification requirements
  • Develop Safety and System-level architecture requirements for novel systems
  • Providing analysis and data as required on new product introduction projects
  • Preparing the appropriate sections of proposals for new equipment and support to system studies
  • Ensuring that lessons learned from previous in-service experience are fully considered and implemented
  • Investigation of in-service failures, including production of statistical models and predictions and providing support to the Product Integrity Committee (PIC) and Product Safety Board (PSB)
  • Participating in design reviews and assessing the impact of any design changes on reliability, maintainability and safety
  • Specifying R&S requirements for bought out specifications and for system components
  • Participating in the development of Standard Work, lessons learnt, processes, R&S tools, skills and best practice
  • Specifying special test requirements for components or systems necessary to achieve or demonstrate achievement of the R&S requirements;
  • Support Risk Analysis activities, the identification of risk and the method of mitigation (analysis, test comparison etc.)
  • Providing R&S technical expertise, advice and guidance across a wide variety of projects. Able to guide junior RMS engineers

Occasionally, the R&S engineer may be required by the Company to perform other tasks which are not included in the above description but are within the capabilities of the individual and where necessary training will be given.

Personal Characteristics:

The ideal candidate shall be highly motivated with a strong engineering / mathematics background. Working in the Aerospace or similar high integrity industry, the candidate will be committed to high personal and professional integrity. They shall be able to both work as part of an engineering team and to consult on reliability, maintainability and safety. They shall communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing and relate well to all people inside and outside the organisation.

Skills Required:

  • Engineering / mathematics background with an excellent knowledge of R&S engineering.
  • Knowledge of Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) are essential.
  • Able to understand and analyse systems at unit and detail design level.
  • Able to understand the mathematics associated with Safety and Reliability engineering, including statistics and statistical analysis, probability theory, and mathematical modelling.
  • Possess a good understanding of mechanical and electronic engineering.
  • Computer literate with the ability to use word processor and spreadsheet applications.
  • Knowledge of Fault Tree and FMEA packages, current aerospace standards and certification requirements.
  • Ability to determine system designs from safety requirements and recommend system design changes to adhere to requirements.
  • Interpret, organise, execute, and coordinate milestones and document deliverables
  • Capability to perform Maintainability and occasional ILS analyses would be beneficial.
