Job description

About ARU:

ARU is a global university transforming lives through innovative, inclusive and entrepreneurial education and research. ARU holds a Gold award for the quality of its education, awarded through the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

ARU’s research institutes and four faculties bridge scientific, technical and creative fields.  We deliver impactful research which tackles pressing issues and makes a real difference to our communities.  Our academic excellence has been recognised by the UK’s Higher Education funding bodies, with 16 of our research areas assessed as world leading. We are the largest provider of Nursing, Midwifery, Health and Social Care students in the East of England, and we are also among the UK’s leading universities for degree apprenticeship provision, working with hundreds of employers across the UK.

At our ARU Writtle campus, we specialise in animal, environmental, agricultural and horticultural courses, for learners aged 16 to 18, adult learners, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

About the Role:

The Safety & Security Team is committed to building a diverse team of professionals whose role it is to create a safe and secure environment for students and staff, a place where everybody feels secure and welcome. You will be responsible for ensuring that our students, staff, and visitors are safe and have a positive experience whilst on our campus. On a daily basis you will be interacting with students and staff, using your dynamic problem-solving skills to manage a diverse variety of incidents. Whilst keeping our students safe is the priority the role also involves ensuring that our buildings and other assets are secure. This is not a traditional security role and it is more important that applicants are brilliant communicators rather than having previous security experience.

We're seeking confident people with excellent communication skills, ideally with previous experience in working with students or young adults. Mental health plays a significant part in some of the incidents you will be dealing with so evidence of supporting people that are experiencing difficulties would be beneficial. Strong interpersonal skills are essential, and the ideal candidate will remain calm under pressure, prioritise tasks effectively, and maintain confidentiality. If you're ready to excel in a new and varied, customer-facing role while contributing to our team's success, we encourage you to apply.

Informal enquiries can be made to Nick Morris, Head of Safety & Security, at nick.morris@aru.ac.uk

It is expected that interviews will take place on 14 June 2024

ARU are committed to the safeguarding of all its students, staff and visitors and provides a safe physical environment.

All appointments at ARU Writtle are subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks, including a satisfactory Enhanced criminal records with Children’s Barred List check through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). Further information can be obtained from https://www.gov.uk/disclosure-barring-service-check.

This role is considered exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975, 2013 and 2020. Further information about filtering offences can be found in the DBS filtering guide. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dbs-filtering-guidance/dbs-filtering-guide#can-an-employer-ask-an-individual-to-declare-details-of-all-convictions-and-cautions.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting welfare of our staff and students and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants should be aware that ARU will carry out online searches as part of the due diligence on short listed candidates.

We value diversity at ARU and welcome applications from all sections of the community.

We have a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.

This role does not qualify for visa sponsorship under the point-based system and is therefore only open to applicants with the right to work in the UK.

Committed to being inclusive and open to discuss flexible working.

We reserve the right to close this vacancy once we have received sufficient applications.
