Job description

Key Responsibilities for Salaried GP As a salaried GP you will be mainly based at Whitburn Surgery & occasionally at Albert Road Surgery, however, you may be asked to do specific work for STHC as required; there will be exciting opportunities to be involved with projects across South Tyneside. Duties and Responsibilities The duties of the post are to provide a full range of general medical services as contained within the National Health Services (Primary Care) Act 1997 and which will include domiciliary visits as deemed appropriate. These visits must be triaged and only offered to genuine housebound patients. As post holder you will be expected to support STHC in providing all services outlined in the GMS contract, including work outside of core hours (Enhanced Access). You will be expected to support and input into the aims of the practice in areas of clinical governance, good practice, quality outcomes framework, enhanced services, practice audit, referral review and any other improvement plans as determined by STHC Clinical Lead. You are encouraged to utilise and develop any skills for the improvement of services to patients, such as minor operations, child health surveillance, family planning training or any other services STHC wishes to sign up to. This will be subject to presentation of the appropriate certificates and update of relevant courses. You will be expected to maintain and keep good standards of computerised clinical records in line with GMC guidance at all times. Full involvement in any STHC training and ongoing requirements of our status as a paperless practice is expected. As a sole GP you should be competent to work as duty doctor as well as dealing with other daily enquiries coming your way. It is also expected to be the clinical lead for the practice and run the monthly care home and practice MDT meetings. It is expected to be able to complete all works at the end of the working day for example prescription, tasks, lab links and referrals. You will be expected to maintain and keep good standards of documentation using EMIS. You will be encouraged to contribute to the operational and strategic leadership of the practices within STHC. You will be expected to lead in an area(s) of clinical performance and/or service delivery. 1. Review of Job Plan Your role will be reviewed after 3, 6 and 9 months of employment, and will be developed collaboratively between the STHC and yourself. After this time it will be subject to annual review, or when there are any significant changes to the work pattern suggested by either party. 2. Scheduling in the Job Plan: Clinical duties: You are contracted to provide an agreed number of sessions per week, as per your contract, but you will be expected to be flexible, in particular during holiday periods. You have agreed to deliver an agreed number of sessions per week for Enhanced Hours working. Clinical duties will include seeing people with both acute and long term conditions, which will also include reviews based on the QOF You will be expected to be competent and confident to deliver face to face, telephone, video and email consultation as the practice provides all of these. Appointments are scheduled at 10 minute intervals (which can be changed to longer when appropriate) and you will provide face to face consultations in the morning and in the afternoon, where this is clinically appropriate, and additional extra consultations where demand is excessive. You will be required to make home visits within the session time, however the actual number of house calls is very low and we have specialist care home practitioners that carry out many visits that would otherwise have been undertaken by a GP. You will be expected to deal on a daily basis with telephone queries from patients or other health care professionals in your administrative time. You are expected to follow up results, x-rays, correspondence related to your own patients and also those which have not been generated by yourself and if necessary, the investigations and queries related to other clinicians within the practice, however we do have a robust process for the pre-screening and resultant action of all results/incoming documents so the GP gets very few to act upon. Referrals should be completed on a daily basis in line with practice policy. Investigations and referrals should be completed and associated documentation dealt with within appropriate timescales. Administration/paperwork: Reports: You will be expected to complete examinations and reports for the benefits agency and those expected under the GMS contract on patients known to you. Additionally you may be expected to complete reports requested by other parties such as insurance companies, OFSTED and employers. 3. Computerised records You will be expected to use EMIS bespoke software and follow appropriate processes for computerised record keeping, including computerised clinical templates and protocols as well as ensuring that significant information as determined by the practice is recorded accurately e.g. all QOF domains. You will take part in reconciling information input periodically. 4. Primary care team meetings: formal or informal, essential to the delivery of team based care are held from time to time at the surgery and you will have a close working relationship with the primary care team on a daily basis. You will also be expected to attend any necessary PCN meetings (PCN South or PCN West) and attendance at the monthly Practice Educational Events run by ICB are encouraged. 5. Personal Development - STHC is committed to the highest standards of evidence based medicine and supporting colleagues in achieving this. You will be expected to participate using your Personal Development Time (dependant on sessions per week) in discussions on clinical practice standards, developing practice protocols, mutual professional support for the individual practitioners, audit, significant event analysis, meetings with STHC clinical lead, colleagues in the locality, ICB etc. Where these occur on an ad hoc basis, adjustments to clinical workload may be required. You may be encouraged to become responsible for particular areas of practice development. You may be encouraged to be responsible for an area of the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF), BOS work, PCN work, IIF and other local initiatives. 6. Additional sessions: STHC may agree with a practitioner to undertake work which is not specified in his or her Job Plan by way of additional nominal sessions or fractions thereof. The extra session(s) shall be remunerated on a pro rata basis to a full-time practitioners salary. Any such agreement shall be reviewed when required but at least annually and will be terminable at three months notice on either side. 7. Leave entitlements: as per contract document
