Scenic Designer and Carpenter

Location: Brighton BN2 0AL

Salary: £32,000 - £36,500 (full-time equivalent) per annum

Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Scenic Designer and Carpenter on a permanent basis.

The Scenic Designer and Carpenter will work with the Performing Arts Designer and Theatre Events and Production Coordinator, alongside all teaching and support staff teams to oversee the scenic elements within performing arts.

Role Summary:

The Scenic Designer and Carpenter plays a key role within the Performing Arts Team supporting the Drama & Dance departments with design and fulfilment of the scenic elements of their events.

In addition, the role will support the Performing Arts Technical and Facilities Manager in revenue generation development. The ideal candidate will be experienced in theatrical carpentry and have some portfolio of set construction. Any candidates with experience in scenic/prop design are also encouraged to apply

General Duties and Responsibilities:

Performing Arts Delivery

  • Plan and provide the necessary scenic provision for Dance & Drama events across the school calendar;
  • Support in the design meetings for productions having an impact in the vision of the project;
  • Supporting pupil engagement within the design elements of performing arts.

Maintenance and Stock Management

  • Develop a stock management process of all scenic & props items within the performing arts team;
  • Have clear maintenance and cleaning producers in place for the items under their care.

Relationships with other teams

  • Work closely with the Performing Arts Team;
  • Attend departmental meetings hosted by the Performing Arts Technical and Facilities Manager;
  • Provide creative input into the Arts Programme planning processes, offering appropriate advice and support to the artistic team.

Performance Duties

  • Lead in scenic and properties delivery for Dance & Drama;
  • Construct set and prop items for production within the workshop provided;
  • Work to production budgets issued by the Performing Arts Technical and Facilities Manager;
  • Attend production meetings representing the department;
  • Take on some design work for productions over the year.

Compliance

  • Maintain a good working practice and knowledge of Health & Safety (H&S) compliance regulations;
  • Ensure that all H&S requirements are met for daily use of the equipment relevant to the role;
  • Ensure safe working practices and guidelines are in place for staff and use of equipment;
  • Maintain and develop appropriate and effective systems to create a safe, clean and well-maintained work environment on-stage and backstage.

Person Specification:

Qualification in joinery or relevant experience - Essential;

Experience working in a producing venue - Essential;

Demonstrable knowledge of current Health and Safety rules and regulations as they apply in the workshop - Essential;

Experience of working with students - Desirable;

Excellent Woodworking Skills - Essential;

Metalworking Skills - Desirable;

Good communication skills - Essential;

Approachable, friendly, and works well with other members of a team - Essential;

Set Design - Desirable;

Prop Making Experience - Desirable.

Hours of Work:

The role will operate on an annualised hours basis. Hours will include early mornings, evenings and weekends.

The role will require the candidate to work more than their scheduled hours during peak periods which will be offset during quieter times.

Weekly hours will be agreed with the Head of Stage via a rostering system issued three weeks in advance.

There will be an opportunity for overtime which is to be paid at a flat rate for additional hours worked during production weeks.

Remuneration:

The salary for this role will be £32,000 - £36,500 (full-time equivalent) per annum dependant on experience and agreed hours/weeks of the year.
