Job description

ASEND supports children and young people with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND) with their learning and personal development when they cannot access school or don’t have a school place. We’re looking for a compassionate and confident SEN HLTA/mentor to support a young man in Chesham in his lessons and therapies and take him out on day trips.

About ASEND Support

ASEND supports and tutors young people who are not able to attend school for a number of reasons - often because there’s no suitable place available. We aim to prepare them for a return to mainstream or special school, often as part of a wider support package.

We’re always child-centred and we target the building of emotional resilience and self-confidence alongside developing communication and life skills. It’s all about our students, meeting their specific needs and ensuring they make progress. We work very hard to find just the right mentor or tutor for each young person, matching their skills and expertise to the needs of each unique student.

About our student

You’ll be spending every day with a very active young man who thoroughly enjoys exploring the city, visiting different places and engaging in his education. Our mentor will be joining him in his timetabled activities, in the home and the community. Alongside his set schedule, there will be fun day trips to London to broaden his knowledge and experience. He is working on developing his communication skills and our mentor will support his communication development with patience, empathy and humour.

In the role of HLTA/mentor, you’ll be playing a vital part in his journey towards improved communication, social skills, and overall wellbeing. Your responsibilities will include providing guidance and assistance in travelling on public transport, being out and about and helping him manage his anxiety.

About you:

  • You’ll have experience with young people who have SEN, especially in the areas of communication needs and anxiety.

  • You’ll have a passion for helping children overcome their barriers to learning and difficulties with engagement.

  • You’ll be good at building rapport and strong relationships with young people and their families.

  • Have the ability to motivate and inspire pupils - and have fun with them.

  • Be able to keep routines and be punctual and consistent, but also flexible enough to change activities on the day.

  • Make the wellbeing, achievement, and progress of your pupils central to everything that you plan and do.

Benefits:

  • Generous and competitive rates of pay (£120-£150 a day).

  • Opportunities for professional development.

  • Friendly expert support and guidance to enable you to meet individual needs and to ensure that you feel confident in your position.

  • Plenty of opportunities for training in working with children and young people with SEND.

  • Being part of a friendly and supportive team.

At ASEND you will always be well supported by our highly qualified and experienced team and well-remunerated for your work.
