About us
The CRUK Scotland Institute is a cancer research institute situated in Glasgow with approximately 250 researchers split across 30 research groups consisting of PIs, postdoctoral scientists, PhD students and scientific officers. It is one of Europe's leading cancer research centres, supporting cutting-edge work into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. As well as core support from Cancer Research UK, the Institute also receives an additional third of its total income from external grants and industry collaborations. It has an excellent reputation for fundamental cancer research, including world-class metabolism studies and renowned in vivo modelling of tumour growth and metastasis, with particular emphasis on the following key themes:
- Cancer vulnerabilities caused by energetic stress and aberrant metabolism.
- Interplay between the tumour microenvironment, metastasis, and recurrence; and
- Biology of early disease, aimed at developing a ‘precision prevention’ approach.
The Institute is supported by a range of advanced technologies including spatial transcriptomics, deep sequencing, advanced imaging, proteomics, and metabolomics. Its research ethos is about excellence, honesty, openness, accountability, and integrity.
The Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Group is a highly interdisciplinary team comprising software engineering, mathematics, computer science and biology. It applies AI and deep learning techniques alongside conventional statistics and Machine Learning algorithms to the analysis of multimodal data emerging from our technologies. By combining data from these different modalities, we are able to develop a more holistic view of tumours and their growth and maintenance, and to use these data to position our preclinical models against patient cohorts.
A position is available within the core bioinformatics team for a Senior Bioinformatician to apply their skills in collaborative analyses of datasets arising from research groups across the institute. The successful applicant will join a highly collaborative, dynamic, and inclusive environment in which computational biologists, software engineers and statisticians work closely with bench- and clinical scientists to develop a better understanding of the processes underpinning cancer pathology.
Requirements:
- A PhD in a relevant field (e.g., bioinformatics, computer science), and significant experience in bioinformatics data analysis
- Demonstrable ability to write substantial bodies of code in relevant programming language (e.g., R and Python)
- Knowledge of modern statistical approaches as applied to biological data.
- Excellent communication skills and an ability to work in inter-disciplinary research environment.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to work concurrently on multiple projects.
- A desire to see the output of your work translated into real-world impact.
