Job description


An exciting opportunity has arisen for an innovative Senior Biomedical Scientist within LCL Clinical Biochemistry. The successful applicant will be educated to MSc level or demonstrable experience in Clinical Biochemistry. The successful candidate should demonstrate excellent leadership skills and have experience of maintaining UKAS ISO15189 standards.
This post will be based at the Aintree site.
The duties of the post will include the supervision of an area of Clinical Chemistry. In conjunction with other senior staff you will cover all aspects of service provision, method development, coordination of BMS and support staff to ensure that a quality service is maintained and delivered. The successful candidate should be able to and willing to work across sites in LCL Clinical Chemistry: BGH, AUH and RLUH.
Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was created on 1 October 2019 following the merger of two adult acute Trusts, Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.
The merger provides an opportunity to reconfigure services in a way that provides the best healthcare services to the city and improves the quality of care and health outcomes that patients experience.
The Trust runs Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool University Dental Hospital and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

1.1 To have supplemented degree level qualifications by having achieved knowledge and skills to Masters degree level.
1.2 To maintain specialist technical and analytical knowledge by participating in CPD.
1.3 To maintain State Registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC)
1.4 To conform to the HPC Code of Conduct for Biomedical Scientists.
1.5 To ensure compliance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which reflect local and national standards of work practice e.g. Clinical Pathology Accreditation Standards (CPA).
1.6 To have developed the knowledge and expertise necessary to perform specialised Biochemistry procedures during rotation through the highly specialised laboratory sections associated with a teaching hospital tertiary referral role.
2.1 To deal sympathetically during liaison with colleagues, other healthcare professionals and staff from external organisations.
2.2 To use empathy and understanding to ensure that technical, clinical and linguistic barriers to understanding are overcome.
2.3 To explain to service users departmental policies relating to contentious issues, that conflict with laboratory service targets.
2.4 To report results to clinicians and other service users in accordance with SOPs.
2.5 To explain technical issues relating to results to clinicians and other service users.
2.6 To provide advice to clinicians and other service users regarding appropriate testing protocols e.g. timing of samples for Paracetamol analysis.
2.7 To provide advice to clinicians and other service users regarding specimen types, timing of collection of specimen and turnaround times.
2.8 To ensure appropriate action is taken in the event of a conflict of priorities relating to concurrent demands placed upon the service.
2.9 To respond to requests for assistance from other trusts that have experienced equipment failure with a positive and helpful approach.
2.10 To advise, organise and motivate those students, MLAs and Biomedical Scientists working in the section Scientific & Technical
3.1 To assess the suitability and appropriateness of samples submitted to the laboratory and to take remedial action when required.
3.2 To analyse specimens for screening, diagnostic and clinical management of patients using complex, specialised and very expensive equipment.
3.3 To interpret technical validity of results, which may be anomalous, incomplete, complex or conflicting, using professional knowledge and experience.
3.4 To make technical assessments of method and instrument performance by monitoring quality control used on specialist laboratory methods and analytical systems.
