Job description

To be managerially and technically responsible to the Section Head of High Dependency 1 (HD1). Additionally, to be technically supportive and co-operative to the other Senior Technologists within the Heart & Lung Centre. To be responsible to the Lead Surgeon, Consultant Anaesthetist and Consultant Cardiologist, Ward mangers and Matrons in the relevant areas for all technically related clinical matters associated with medical devices. To carry out procedures and maintain the technical standards set by Equipment Manufacturers, Section Head of HD1 and Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering (MPCE) Procedures/Policies for medical equipment used in the Heart & Lung Centre and the rest of the Trust where applicable.
To work closely with the other Senior Clinical Technologists in their specialist areas when required. To participate in the evaluation, installation, commissioning, maintenance calibration and administration of all Heart & Lung Centre electronic/ mechanical equipment and information systems as required. For all planned maintenance and repairs, to use personal initiative and expertise assessing the seriousness and the implications of the problem by responding appropriately to the urgency of the users request to optimise workflows and priorities. Applying fault finding techniques to diagnose faults in devices and systems with complex and inter-related components e.g.
electronic, electrical, computer, network, pneumatic, extracorporeal systems and X-ray systems. Clinical/Technical analysis and resolution of issues will be frequently required whilst the medical device is providing life support, treatment or monitoring to the patient e.g. Ventilators, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, patient monitoring/haemodynamics, diagnostic imaging equipment, life support machines, anaesthetic machines, Nitric Oxide, haemofiltration etc to facilitate unnecessary disruption to the patient care or the service. Provide cover and assist other areas of the Cardiothoracic Speciality services.
Will help support the specialised clinical information systems/technologies utilised throughout the centre eg DICOM Image storage, Cardiology Information Systems, ECG storage, Clinical Audit systems etc. This will entail a sound understanding of both PC/server-based hardware and/or software and associated network technology. To be aware of the need to achieve and maintain a high level of expertise which, combined with substantial personal initiative and resourcefulness, will enable procedures, repairs and support to clinicians be completed independently without supervision. To be aware of the need for safety of medical equipment and the workshop area in general, particularly with regard to patient and staff safety.
To ensure that the Consultant Anaesthetists, Lead Surgeon, Cardiologist and nursing leads are informed immediately in the case of any matter, that may affect the safety of the patient, when working in the appropriate areas. To contribute towards the training of medical, nursing and technical staff in the application and use of medical equipment and, where appropriate, give technical advice to staff including overseeing the Trainee Clinical Technologist. To participate in any research and development work undertaken by the Heart Centre which are relevant to the post. This may also include Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering based systems as required.
To be responsible for maintaining accurate records of new and existing equipment for acceptance, repairs, hazards, etc for the life cycle of a medical device or system. Ensures accurate, relevant and detailed service information is recorded on MPCE Performance Management Systems at all times and that this is done in a timely manner which will be subject to regular audit and review. To carry out clinical support and technical duties associated with non-routine specialised treatments or procedures such as haemofiltration, Cardiac Output, Ventilation, Intra-aortic balloon pump therapy or any new clinical therapy as required by Medical staff or change in practice. Implementation of new and revised protocols and standards for Clinical Governance, HS11 Policy, Managing Medical Devices (Jan 2021), Information Governance, IRMER, NHSLA, CQC, Standards for Better Health, BSI requirements and locally agreed Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering policies.
To take part in any administrative duties which may be required for the efficient running of the service, including the completion of records associated with the Resource Management arrangements and MPCEs Key Performance Management System. To collate matters associated with your annual leave, sick leave, on-call, overtime, timesheets etc, and to communicate this information to the Section Head of HD1. To be available for travel to other hospitals and clinics as required. To demonstrate a flexible approach to the needs of the service provided by the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department.
To conform to safe working practices, Trust and Departmental policies and procedures. To demonstrate a flexible approach to undertake any other duties which may be required by the medical and nursing staff associated within the Trust and HD1 areas of responsibility, (Other) Section Heads, Operational Managers, Head of Clinical Engineering or Head of MPCE, and which are appropriate to the post. To be available for on-call and overtime work as necessary and appropriate to the operational needs of the service. This may include working at weekends on a rotational basis.
Some work maybe required in areas where infectious diseases and pandemic viruses may be present. Safe practice and extreme caution for self and others will be required at all times ensuring the appropriate PPE is worn.
