Pay Range
$191,220 - $294,672 Annually
$191,220 - $245,544 Annually for the SES.4 level
$229,440 - $294,672 Annually for the SES.5 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We are seeking a highly qualified scientist or engineer to join our interdisciplinary team of Multi-Disciplinary Researchers in Computational Biology and Biomedical Applications. You will work with researchers from multiple complementary fields to provide solutions and lead projects supporting a variety of problems with applications in computational biology and biomedical research. Qualified candidates should have in-depth knowledge of bioinformatic toolkits and a background in applied research in computational biology or a complementary scientific discipline providing underlying skills in data analytic techniques. While supporting applied research projects, selected candidates will provide mentorship and practical training to junior members of the group to help them develop depth and breadth in machine learning techniques. This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED) within the Engineering Directorate.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role you will

  • Lead research efforts in bioinformatics to enable development of state-of-the-art algorithms for problem domains in computational biology.
  • Develop and guide the execution of strategies that enhance the ability of LLNL to address new opportunities in molecular biology, genomics, synthetic biology, protein engineering, pathogen evolution.
  • Interface directly with management and external sponsors to communicate technical milestones and solicit input from technical leaders in the biomedical space.
  • Communicate results through formal technical reports, presentations and peer-reviewed scientific journals as appropriate.
  • Participate in strategic planning and help develop an integrated strategy for computational biology.
  • Work closely with U.S. Government sponsors, other organizations, and technology leaders to provide technical input, and develop and refine new concepts that support national priorities.
  • Mentor junior technical staff to promote professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.5 level

  • Influence and interact directly with senior leaders at U.S. government agencies to develop new mission architectures and demonstration systems.
  • Provide guidance and strategic vision for scientific and technical direction of projects within the Laboratory’s growing Biosecurity Mission Focus Area.
  • Brief work to senior management on overall impact and approach.
  • Influence strategic technical decisions made by senior management and external customers.
  • Represent the Laboratory on external high-level scientific or technical committees.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Applied Statistics, Applied Mathematics or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Subject matter expertise and significant experience developing and applying novel bioinformatics tools in one or more of the following areas: molecular biology, genomics, synthetic biology, protein engineering, pathogen evolution.
  • Significant experience in statistical modeling and inference (e.g., probabilistic graphical models, Gaussian processes, or nonparametric Bayesian methods) for bioinformatic applications.
  • Significant experience in the application of one or more higher-level programming languages such as Python, Java, Scala, or C/C++.
  • Significant experience with work planning and execution of work for government sponsor organizations including DOE and DHS.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present technical ideas/results and provide advice to management.
  • Ability to travel off-site for sponsor and customer interaction.

Additional qualifications at the SES.5 level

  • Extensive experience managing projects and teams.
  • Extensive experience effectively managing concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities and implementing advanced research concepts in a multi-disciplinary team environment where commitments and deadlines are important to project success.
  • Extensive experience collaborating across research (university or national laboratory) and commercial (industry) institutions.

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
