Job description

  • Contract Type: Fixed Term Contract
  • Ref: R00TR02477
  • Closing Date: 09 April 2024

Last year we completed our most comprehensive rebrand in over 30 years, resulting in an increased focus on our Design System product (NEL). We’re now on a hugely exciting and ambitious journey to evolve the Design System, systematically applying the new brand, and increasing the quality and adoption of the Design System to meet the needs of the organisation and all its digital products and services.

For us to do this brilliantly our content needs to work much (much) harder. We’re looking for Senior Content Designer for 12-months to be the custodian of content in the Design System. This role will help us make a step change in the Design System by increasing the quality, recency, and accessibility of guidance, building content best practise into UI system components, and help us in building out new patterns. We need this person to define and re-establish content best practises in our team workflow and ensure that Content Design best practises are embedded in the Design System.

As well as being a Content whizz, we’re also looking for someone that will connect and collaborate with the Brand team and other Content Designers across the organisation, listening to their needs, ensuring that they are heard and supporting them in their use of the Design System on their projects.

The Design System team is within the Digital department within the COO function. It supports the delivery of digital products across the whole organisation. Our Design System product is used in customer and colleague facing web platforms and ever expanding to support new audiences and technologies.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, at one of our offices. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.

This is a 12 month secondment. This role can be based out of our Swindon, Northampton, Bournemouth or London office. There will be a requirement to visit our Swindon, Nationwide office occasionally for collaboration.

If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll be joining a team of designers and developers as the Senior Content Designer within the team. As the voice of content within the Design System team, you’ll be supporting the Design Lead and Accessibility Lead in their thinking and working closely with the rest of the team to produce the highest quality, reusable UI components and supporting guidance.

You’ll be taking ownership of the Design System website, used by designers and developers across the organisation, ensuring that the site has a clear information architecture and making sure our content is purposeful and valuable to the Design System users. You’ll establish the processes required to ensure that the site is continually up to date and optimised for our users.

You’ll also be working collaboratively with UI designers and developers to ensure that changes to system components have the appropriate content considerations, including any default content, and are delivered to the required specification.

Part of your role will be to connect with other Content Designers within Nationwide, understanding more about how they’re using the Design System in their projects. This means you’ll be working with a wide group of stakeholders, helping shape the experience of Nationwide’s products and services across a variety of platforms and channels.

About you

  • You’ll have experience in total ownership of website content from the information architecture, through to ensuring content accuracy, quality, and accessibility.
  • You’ll have a good understanding of content practises in Design Systems at a component and guidance level.
  • You’ll have a detailed knowledge of content best practise in experience design, with the ability to use the appropriate methods, activities, and tools to support the creation of quality, reusable system components, patterns and guidance.
  • You’ll have proven experience of designing for inclusivity and accessibility.
  • You’ll have experience and evidence of developing content patterns across a variety of digital products and services.
  • You’re able to engage and influence with stakeholders at all levels within a complex organisation.

Ideally, you’ll also have experience working:

  • In financial services, eCommerce, or within the public sector.

On or with a:

  • multi-brand Design System.
  • multi-technology (web and app) system design.

Our Customer First behaviours are all about putting customers and members at the heart of how we work together. You can strengthen your application by showing the behaviours that resonate with you, and how you might have already demonstrated these.

  • Say it straight - This is about being honest and direct with good intent and saying what needs to be said in the room. It’s also about being clear, precise, and using language that we and, importantly, our customers and members can understand.
  • Push for better - This is about aiming high and constantly looking for better in how we work together and serve our customers and members.
  • Get it done - This is about prioritising what will have the greatest impact, being decisive and taking accountability for delivering on the end-to-end outcome.

We know applying for jobs can sometimes feel like you’re sending an application into a black hole. We review each application individually. So, it’s a good idea to call out your most relevant experience on your application to give yourself the best chance.

The extras you’ll get

There are all sorts of employee benefits available at Nationwide, including:

  • A personal pension – if you put in 7% of your salary, we’ll top up by a further 16%
  • Up to 2 days of paid volunteering a year
  • Life assurance worth 8x your salary
  • A great selection of additional benefits through our salary sacrifice scheme
  • Gympass – Access to a range of free and paid options for health and wellness.
  • Access to an annual performance related bonus
  • Access to training to help you develop and progress your career
  • 25 days holiday, pro rata

What makes us different

Nationwide is the world’s largest building society. With over 15 million customers, we have a relationship with almost a quarter of the UK’s population. We’ve got the scale to compete with the big banks, but we’re not a bank.

As a building society, we’re owned by our members – that’s our customers who have their current account, mortgage or savings with us. It means we can do things differently to deliver our Purpose – Banking – but fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society.

When you work at Nationwide, you can experience that difference for yourself. You’ll be part of a high-performing, purpose-driven organisation that offers rewarding career experiences and a highly competitive range of benefits to match. You’ll also be joining us at an important time as we seek to reach more and more people in the UK. We want everyone in the UK to know that they don’t have to bank with a bank. They can choose a modern mutual instead.

What to do next

We respond to everyone, so we will be in contact shortly after the closing date to let you know the outcome of your application.
