Job Title: Senior Corporate Counsel

Salary: £80,064 - £90,000 (Dependent Upon Experience)

Location : Peterborough – Required in the office 3 days a week.

This new Peterborough based Senior Corporate Counsel trademark position will deliver comprehensive legal support for trademark & copyright matters.  Caterpillar offers a broad-based trademark practice in service of Caterpillar’s brands, which are ranked among the Top 100 Best Global Brands by Interbrand. 

This role will report to the Associate General Counsel, Global Trademark & Copyright Strategy, working with team members based in the U.S., United Kingdom, and China managing a trademark portfolio of approximately 16,000 applications and registrations. 

What You Will Do:

  • Provide primary trademark prosecution and enforcement support for Caterpillar’s core marks in EAME and global trademark support for several key business units located in EAME.  Other critical initiatives, such as the company’s online marketplace enforcement efforts, copyright enforcement and compliance, and domain name acquisition and maintenance will also be in scope.  

  • Provide leadership and legal expertise on significant IP related issues including trademark & copyright prosecution and enforcement;  portfolio analysis and counsel to business leaders at all levels;

  • Be accountable to assess legal risk; and identify and contribute to resolution of legal issues with a broad band of IP risk exposure.

The Senior Corporate Counsel for Global Trademark & Copyright Strategy will work closely with Caterpillar business unit leadership and staff, as well as Lead Counsel and other members of the Intellectual Property team and collaborate with relevant functional and regional IP legal teams to ensure the provision of responsive and high-quality legal support globally.

What You Have:

  • Risk Management: Knowledge of processes, tools and techniques for assessing and controlling an organization's exposure to risks of various kinds; ability to apply knowledge of risk management appropriately to diverse situations.

  • Problem Solving: willing to take initiative, identify risks, make decisions and take responsibilities to resolve IP related problems and improve IP related results

  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills with demonstrated ability to impact, influence, and negotiate internally and externally.

  • Collaboration: Ability to collaborate vertically and horizontally, across levels and various business functions, and with external parties

  • Legal Analysis: Knowledge of methods and tools used in legal analysis; ability to read, interpret and draw accurate conclusions from both legal and factual information.

  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.

Degree and Experience Requirement:

  • Solicitor and/or Chartered Trademark Attorney or equivalent International qualification.

  • Must have considerable experience in the practice of EU, UK and international trademark law

  • Must have a demonstrated record of interpreting and communicating the substance of complex trademark law issues and the ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision. 

  • Prior copyright compliance and enforcement experience preferable

  • General experience with trademark licensing, patent, and trade dress matters

Top Candidates Will Have:

  • Significant direct client experience

  • Some EU/UK design experience
