We build and operate systems and services to store and manage one of the world's largest media archives, and to make it easy to find and reuse our content in new programmes. We have great people, world class content and cutting edge technology.
Join us in the challenge of unlocking the BBC's incredible 100 year Public Service archive of metadata and media for generations to come!
Key Responsibilities
We are currently building out a next generation, Public Service Data Platform to provide seamless access to the BBC's large archive of programme information, metadata, subtitles, transcripts, production data and restrictions. Up until now, this metadata has been stored in a large number of separate, siloed systems, tightly coupled to their respective business use cases. You'll be working with software engineers building this platform, and will contribute to analysis, ETL/ELT process and reporting to support it.
The right candidate will have a keen interest in data process design, ETL development, data exploration and analysis, and visualisation. The data team is key to helping design and implement key processes that support archive operations. An interest in BBC material and archives will help - our data describes the BBC's output through time, and our job is to help manage and get value from the archives.
Are you the right candidate?
This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of one of the world great media archives at a time when we are aiming to transform our platform and operations. The ideal candidate will bring solid analysis and exploration skills, with an interest in developing their skills for process design, scripting and ETL workflows. It's an ideal opportunity to gain skills and experiences for a motivated individual.
To be successful in this role you will need to experience in:

  • SQL
  • Light ETL development (e.g. using GUI)
  • Experience with working on wide range of complex data sets and formats.
  • Experience with cloud hosted environments (AWS)
  • Ability to present data to wide range of audiences
  • Entity-Relationship data modelling experience
  • Passion for data and a familiarity with data management best practice

It would also be beneficial to have:

  • Python or other scripting experience. Familiarity with regular expression
  • More complex ETL development. Data process design
  • Experience with media metadata
  • Experience of working with a multidiscipline team of analysts, engineers and product leads. Experience of Agile working
  • Data visualisation experience (e.g. Tableau)
  • Data modelling for other db type
