Senior Database Engineer

Senior Database Engineerworking within Financial Services for an initial 6-month contract, this will be paying up to £850 per day (inside IR35). This is a Hybrid position, 3 days per week in the London office.

Job Summary

We are looking to recruit a Senior Database Engineer. Initially, the candidate will take leadership in retiring legacy database from a Product Processor that handles close to 5 million OTC trades a day for the company. A complex integration with upstream and downstream systems, will require careful project planning and execution. The candidate will be required to research alternative products to current data warehouse solution (Sybase IQ). After an objective evaluation, candidate will lead a team of engineers to migrate the current data warehouse to target state.

Main Responsibilities

• Act as a technology lead for delivery of Legacy database migration.


• Research product landscape in market and provide quantified recommendation for solution.


• Create task breakdown and lead development team towards successful execution.


• Work with Product Processor Technology Manager in re-engineer legacy systems.


• Work on data standards, data storage strategy and data fabric required to manage inputs to our Strategic Ledger initiative.


• Working closely with other engineering leads to manage cross team delivery.


• Attending workshops, working groups and other relevant meetings with senior representatives from different lines of business.


• Applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behaviour, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency.

Required Experience

• Demonstrate breadth and depth of design, development and delivery in relational and NoSQL databases. Team currently has Sybase ASE, Oracle, MS SQL and Sybase IQ


• Ability and willingness to understand application use cases and take ownership of database design, storage , partitioning and data archiving.


• Ability to performance tune large size and complex databases


• Work as a guide and mentor for application team & foster an engineering culture.


• Define database release and testing strategy.


• Must have managed complex technology projects for a major investment bank.


• Experience in financial technology, preferably in Financial Accounting, Markets or Corporate banking


• Demonstrable delivery risk management in project plan and dependencies and ability to organize/facilitate conversation leading to an acceptable conclusion.


• Experience of working under Agile, Iterative and waterfall models & program management tools


• Experience of delivering on projects in geographically diverse, multiple teams


• Experience of working with developers and BAs on detailed IT work plans, schedule


• Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding the group, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy
