Job description

This role is part of the in-house Chief Investment Officer’s team, with key responsibility for managing the Nationwide Pension Fund’s £5bn asset portfolio on behalf of the Trustees of the Fund. You will report directly to the CIO and responsibilities also include the delivery of key strategic projects, including longevity hedging, end-game planning, climate risk management and portfolio asset reallocations.

On a day-to-day basis, you will lead a team that oversees the operational management of the Fund’s assets.  Providing reporting, cash management and analytical duties, the team also implements investment related decisions made by the Trustees.

Individually, the role is responsible for many key stakeholder relationships.  This will include working with senior members of the Nationwide Building Society as well as the Fund’s external investment consultant, custodian, transition manager and a range of investment managers.  You would be expected to take the lead on developing existing and creating new relationships as appropriate.

This is a Hybrid role which will require 2 days per week in our London, Swindon or Northampton offices.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, at one of our offices. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.

If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.

What you’ll be doing

Within this role you will be supporting the Chief Investment Officer with the implementation of the Pension Investment Strategy on behalf of the Trustees.  Investing in all asset classes, monitoring performance, overseeing asset managers, reporting on performance, ensuring appropriate liquidity is available to meet the funds cash needs and payments to members, managing de-risking activity and ensuring efficient transitions between assets.

Your key accountabilities will include:

  • Generating new investment proposals which are considered and well-researched, then working with your team to provide a clear and concise presentation to the Pension Fund Trustees.
  • Maintaining a thorough knowledge of the markets in which the Fund is or has the potential to be invested, and developing the understanding of your team across these markets.
  • Maintaining a working knowledge of Pension Fund regulation and ensuring the Fund can meet new requirements.
  • Leading your team to maintain and improve reporting models for the Fund’s asset base and produce timely and accurate reports on a regular and ad-hoc basis for the Trustees and internal stakeholders.
  • Taking ownership of key stakeholder relationships and developing those relationships to maximise the performance of the Fund. This will include potentially challenging conversations with senior management from a variety of organisations.
  • Ensuring the operational and risk management requirements of the Fund are maintained and regularly reviewed for potential efficiency improvements.

About you

  • A great head for figures, analytical abilities, and an eye for detail.
  • A proven ability to present complex subject matter in a concise and easy-to-understand way, including to senior stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and experience of dealing with challenging stakeholders.
  • A thorough knowledge of and working experience with investment asset classes.
  • Confidence working independently, as well as being a team player able to stand up to challenge whilst maintaining open communication.
  • The ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, often at very senior levels, inside and outside of the Society.
  • Personal drive and initiative, and the ability to develop new knowledge quickly.

It would be nice if you have:

  • A back-ground in Defined Benefit pensions, bank treasury, asset management or are suitably qualified (CFA or FIA).
  • Experience leading, engaging, and developing a team.
  • Understanding of how a defined benefit Pension Fund operates.

Our Customer First behaviours are all about putting customers and members at the heart of how we work together. You can strengthen your application by showing the behaviours that resonate with you, and how you might have already demonstrated these.

  • Say it straight - This is about being honest and direct with good intent and saying what needs to be said in the room. It’s also about being clear, precise, and using language that we and, importantly, our customers and members can understand.
  • Push for better - This is about aiming high and constantly looking for better in how we work together and serve our customers and members.
  • Get it done - This is about prioritising what will have the greatest impact, being decisive and taking accountability for delivering on the end-to-end outcome.

We know applying for jobs can sometimes feel like you’re sending an application into a black hole. We review each application individually. So, it’s a good idea to call out your most relevant experience on your application to give yourself the best chance.

What makes us different

Nationwide is the world’s largest building society. With over 15 million customers, we have a relationship with almost a quarter of the UK’s population. We’ve got the scale to compete with the big banks, but we’re not a bank.

As a building society, we’re owned by our members – that’s our customers who have their current account, mortgage or savings with us. It means we can do things differently to deliver our Purpose – Banking – but fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society.

When you work at Nationwide, you can experience that difference for yourself. You’ll be part of a high-performing, purpose-driven organisation that offers rewarding career experiences and a highly competitive range of benefits to match. You’ll also be joining us at an important time as we seek to reach more and more people in the UK. We want everyone in the UK to know that they don’t have to bank with a bank. They can choose a modern mutual instead.
