He angitūtanga: The opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Economist to join Auckland Council’s Chief Economist Unit. Be part of a collaborative team that provides independent, evidence-based advice on the policy issues and trade-offs that matter for Auckland's wellbeing.

Support the Chief Economist in providing leadership on key issues for Auckland Council, by applying sound economic analysis. Help build the reputation of the Chief Economist Unit for technical and applied expertise, especially in the fields of urban economics and economic appraisal.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include undertaking analysis of urban economic issues, using key data sets, advising council staff on the economic implications of policy and investment proposals, and building awareness of resource impacts and trade-offs. The aim is to enable informed decision-making by Auckland Council on behalf of Aucklanders.

The range of issues span land use, urban development policy, the housing market, infrastructure funding and finance, the transport system, as well as the natural environment and climate change.

He kōrero mōu: About you

We are looking for an economist who can build relationships and act as a trusted advisor. A critical thinker who can apply economic theory to real-world problems, you are also an effective communicator who can explain economic concepts in simple terms.

Equipped with an excellent quantitative background, you have experience in dealing with large data sets, ideally on land use, housing, or transport data. You have a good grounding in cost-benefit analysis and have worked with econometric techniques to answer research or policy questions.

This mix of skills and behaviours enables you to deliver results and influence your stakeholders.

A tertiary degree in economics is essential for this role (postgraduate desirable), as is an affinity for Auckland.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer

We work on a wide range of intellectually stimulating and high impact projects, and so there is variety as well as scope to go deeper into some issues. We work flexibly, have a positive, can-do attitude and have a consultative approach. This a great opportunity for an economist who wants to get stuck into urban issues and hone their capability as an advisor.

To get an idea of the thought leadership role we play, and how we communicate with Aucklanders, have a look at our publications.

See the Senior Economist position description and our employee benefits for more information.

Apply today with your cover letter and CV. If applying from overseas, please check immigration requirements on www.immigration.govt.nz

The salary range for this role, commensurate on skills and experience, is NZ$132,000 to 154,000.
