We need your Leadership

We have plenty of challenging work in the Food, Health and Safety Team and routinely take enforcement action where necessary. To give an example, one of our businesses exports £30m in shellfish to Europe, Asia and China per year. So we are looking for an experienced Senior EHO to work alongside our existing staff.

Sea, Sand & Surf with stunning coastal views

North Devon is a coastal area of outstanding natural beauty where you can find a great work-life balance.  It includes many special places, such as Croyde and Woolacombe – the UK's first World Surfing Reserve – Braunton Burrows, a UNESCO World Biosphere and a gateway to Exmoor National Park.

 Business and Tourism

Our economy is expanding as businesses recognise the benefits of operating in this invigorating environment.  The population massively increases in the summer and we have a significant number of businesses linked to hospitality and tourism, alongside a diverse range of food producers, including shellfish aquaculture, processors and exporters.

The Office

We have a hybrid working policy to balance some working from home. The Office is a great working environment with a good vibe, plenty of humour and laughter. The Council has a Behaviour Framework which clearly sets out our Values and Behaviours under the heading One Team. This encourages a culture of positive regard throughout, our people are reminded to be kind, caring, collaborative, nurturing, curious, have integrity and achieve results through systems thinking and innovation.

We would love to have the chance to talk with you and plan to hold a Teams event on 12th June 2024 at 10.00 a.m.  For an informal conversation and/or an invite to the Teams event, please contact –

ARE YOU AWESOME – WE’RE HIRING!

If your answer to the above is “absolutely YES I am…” and you are someone that is passionate about making A difference in the north Devon community - let’s talk some more.

North Devon Council is building on the success of our exemplary teams by recruiting accomplished graduates to be developed as generalist compliance practitioners.  We have an established team of experienced officers and are well placed to provide mentoring and development.  We are supported by Elected Members and Senior Management to grow the team and deliver exciting projects.

You will initially work in the Food, Health and Safety Team and develop competence as a food inspector but will also be deployed as a practitioner in Environmental Protection, Private Sector Housing, Licensing and Planning Enforcement. You are more likely to be shortlisted if you have some experience working in local government or have experience in a compliance role.

We have committed to establishing a team where graduates can grow within the organisation. Please take a few moments to review our YouTube promotional video watch the final video here; you can also take a look at what our existing graduates say about working for us watch the video here

If you are interested in this role, we are holding a virtual open session via Microsoft Teams on 6 June 2024, at 10.00 a.m., you can come along and ask questions of our Service Manager (Environmental Health) who can talk through his new ‘One Team’ structure.  North Devon Council has a values and behaviours framework and this advocates a caring ethos where staff are treated with positive regard and dignity.  Our district is an area of outstanding natural beauty with coastal walks, surf and sand, so if you’d like an invite to this open event, email daryl.littlejohns@northdevon.gov.uk telling us a little bit about yourself and your experience and you will be sent an invitation to the Teams session.

We offer a flexible approach to work, enabling you to work from our offices and from home so you can make the most of your work life balance.  If you’re not a resident, or past or present visitor to the area and you’d like to dip your toe into North Devon waters, please take a look at this video Visit North Devon (visitdevon.co.uk) which will give you some lovely insights into what North Devon has to offer.
