Background

Established in 2004, the Tyndall National Institute is one of Europe's leading centres in deep tech ICT research and development. It hosts over 600 researchers, engineers and support staff and has a network of over 200 industry partners and customers worldwide. Tyndall National Institute is performing breakthrough research in photonics, electronics, micro-nano-technology and smart systems to deliver innovative solutions in Health (i.e. medtech, and biopharma), agritech, communications, energy and the environment.

Tyndall acts as a gateway for industry customers, providing world-class facilities and expertise for the development of hardware and software for smart sensors and systems, but also helping to identify technologies and expertise from outside Tyndall where applicable, to ensure technology development is enabled in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible.

Purpose of the role

Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork invites applications for the position as Senior Electronic Design Engineer forthe ENTIRE European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH - ). This is an exciting opportunity for you to help define and implement applied research projects, training programmes and support for companies and public sector organisations in their digital transformation journeys. You will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers and engineers with a focus on developing devices and systems for digital transformation, and with the ENTIRE partners in MTU, UCC, Walton Institute and SkillNet Ireland. Other activities will include engaging with stakeholders, preparing documentation related innovation services, performing digital maturity assessments, signposting of external services, collaborators and funding opportunities.

The position will involve travel to meetings at customer / partner sites, and to conferences and workshops dedicated to supporting the network of over 200 European Digital Innovation Hubs.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of the Life Sciences Interface Group or their nominee, you will:

• Support the Head of the Life Sciences Interface (LSI) Group or their nominee to engage relevant stakeholders including representatives of the ENTIRE EDIH consortium partners, Government Departments, funding agencies, SMEs, industry and public sector organisations, and other persons as applicable.
• Work with SMEs and public sector organisations to perform Digital Maturity Assessments, and identify opportunities for them to accelerate their digital transformations journeys through ENTRE.
• Ensure excellence in the delivery of all project outputs, including services, technical reports, prototypes and demonstrators, and other outputs as applicable.
• Participate in signposting of services from other EDIHs, public and private funding opportunities, and relevant supply chain providers as appropriate.
• Ensure all activities are compliant with the EDIH funding model, the Tyndall Quality Management system and required Health & Safety standards.
• Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post, including developing and delivering selected aspects of the overall Tyndall National Institute 2025 strategy (strategic-plans- ).
• A Level 8 (e.g. Honours Bachelor's Degree) degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline of science or engineering.
• Typically, 6 years' industrial or postgraduate in the development of hardware and/or software for electronic sensor devices and /or systems.
• Demonstrated technical competence related to CAD software for design of electronic devices (including schematic capture and PCB design).
• Demonstrated track record of successful delivery of projects in a collaborative environment.
• Strong communication and negotiation skills.
• Evidence of entrepreneurial experience
• Evidence of creative skills/creativity
• A postgraduate qualification in technology and/or business.
• Experience in design of electronics compliant with highly regulated sectors.
• Evidence of high quality outputs including high quality technical reports / publications.
• Track record of engaging with external customers for development of system specifications.
• Evidence of technical writing, including contributions to technical reports, publications and / or patent applications.
• Experience in working on sensors and systems for life science applications including medtech and biopharma.
• Experience in using the Altium designer CAD software for electronics/PCB design.
• Experience in using the firmware (C, C++) and software programming languages (C++, C#, Java or Python).
• Experience in designing the experiments and writing reports for device and/or system testing and verification.
• Knowledge and/or experience with IoT systems, paradigms and technologies.
• Experience in using laboratory equipment for devices and/or systems testing and characterization (laboratory power supply, oscilloscope, signal generator, SMU).

Appointment may be made on the Grade 6 Admin III scale (B) € 56,079 - €66,954 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
