Job description

£70,417 per annum (excluding London HCAS)
NHS England leads the NHS in England to deliver high quality care for all. We support NHS organisations to deliver better outcomes for our patients and communities, work to get the best possible value for taxpayers, and drive improvement across the NHS. From April 2023, NHS England, Health Education England and NHS Digital became a single organisation, putting workforce, data, digital and technology at the heart of our plans to transform the NHS. Following the integration of those organisations, the new NHS England is transforming how it works and this is an exciting time to join the expanding in-house Legal Team.
The NHS England Legal Team provides legal advice, support and expertise to promote good decision-making, governance and accountability to Parliament, and to deliver better outcomes for patients. We provide an accessible, high-quality legal service that enables NHS England to comply with the law, manage legal risk, make effective decisions, and demonstrate itself as being a well-run leader of the NHS. The team is made up of eight mini teams specialising in: Employment Risk, Litigation, three different areas of Public Law, Commercial, Technology and Information Law. As well as providing advice ourselves, we outsource work to a panel of external legal advisors.
The Legal Team is a dynamic, supportive and diverse team. Working collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation, we use our skills, knowledge and experience to ensure that NHS England receives professional and pragmatic legal advice and support in all areas of strategy, policy and operations.
Our vision is to be:
  • a highly valued and trusted expert in-house legal team, committed to:
    • excellence, and high standards of professionalism and integrity
    • working collaboratively and in partnership with others
    • understanding the new NHS England and the NHS it leads
    • delivering contextually based practical solutions
    • working closely with our external suppliers to ensure they deliver the same
  • a great team to work in, where we all feel celebrated, valued and supported, and are able to contribute, achieve our potential and make a difference.
This is an exciting, fast-paced environment which provides the opportunity to get involved in high profile, high quality legal work whilst contributing to the values and patient outcomes of the NHS in a non-time-recording environment. You will need to maintain a focus on value for money and managing cost, but we don’t operate a time recording system for our in-house lawyersTeam members need keen prioritisation skills, resilience, the ability to deal with ambiguity and excellent communication skills. You will need to rapidly build and maintain good relationships with colleagues across the team and the wider organisation at all levels and provide legally sound, pragmatic, solutions focused advice within the context of NHS England’s wider duties and functions as a public body.
We are currently looking to appoint to multiple roles in our Employment Risk Team, up to 5x Senior Employment Risk Lawyer, 8C and 3x Employment Risk Lawyer, 8B.
We also expect to recruit to other posts in the coming months in other areas of the team including Information law, Litigation and Public Law, although other roles may also be advertised. All posts will be advertised on our website so please check there regularly for new opportunities.
