Job description

Senior Environmental Health Officer

About Us:

The extraordinary story of over 6000 restaurants

Environmental Health at Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories, where passionate and expert professionals go above and beyond for their colleagues every day.

Cian believes that food brings people together. His work opens his eyes to the widest range of people and places. From restaurants to hotels, cafés to bakeries, his inspections keep the public safe, and help businesses keep their doors open. And with over 6000 restaurants to explore, if there’s one thing he knows for certain, it’s that he’ll never be bored.

The Role

As a Senior Environmental Health Officer in Public Protection & Licensing, you can make your own powerful contribution to local residents and businesses across Westminster.

We have opportunities across a range of departments where you will focus on more complex cases while also developing and mentoring less experienced team members[Lymn, Tif1] .

These roles are available part-time, as a job-share, or full-time. This is because we want the best people for our roles and we recognise that sometimes those people aren’t available full-time.

Joining our combined Food and Health and Safety team, you’ll work to reduce the risk to public health from food purchased, produced or eaten in Westminster. This team also ensures health and safety within venues ranging from  places of worship to Theatres.

Or, joining our newly created Pro-active Noise team, you’ll help to deal with complex and repeat complaints around noise, odour and light pollution. This will include late night or overnight shifts, but for these you’ll receive a 13.5% shift enhancement to your pay.

Wherever join us, you’ll carry out routine or unannounced visits and inspections to ensure people and businesses are complying with legislation, prioritising the health and wellbeing of our communities, and taking action to improve conditions through engagement, education and enforcement.

Putting residents at the heart of everything you do, you’ll work closely with communities to respond to concerns and complaints, resolving issues and risks quickly and efficiently. Using your specialist Environmental Health knowledge to prioritise those at highest risk, you’ll work to better understand our communities’ needs and how to meet them.

About You

An established professional passionate about Environmental Health and improving outcomes for communities, you’ll likely to have a background in Environmental Health or another public-facing role, and will be used to responding to complex, high profile complaints.

Whether you are looking for a new challenge in your career or returning to the profession we have a place for you.

You’ll be a natural communicator with a strong customer focus, capable of building and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues at all levels of the council and beyond. You’ll be committed to improving public health, confident building trust amongst communities and reacting calmly to emotionally challenging situations.

This is a fantastic opportunity to expand your expertise in a local authority that manages some of the busiest, most diverse and vibrant districts of London including Covent Garden, Soho, China Town, Theatreland and the Oxford Street shopping district.

What we Offer:

Westminster is an amazing place. We are home to more than 200,000 residents from all backgrounds, over 50,000 vibrant and vital businesses and three-quarters-of-a-million people work in Westminster.

The salary range for this role is £40,005-£54,135, and we encourage applications from applicants at all stages of their career. Your specific salary will depend on your qualification, skills and experience.

Westminster City Council’s strategy is to work towards a Fairer Westminster. A Fairer Westminster is one in which our communities are at the heart of our decision-making and help to determine the city’s future. By working directly with our communities and other partners, we can build a more inclusive city that celebrates our diverse communities, and where residents, workers and visitors from all backgrounds will feel welcome and safe.

At Westminster City Council, we pride ourselves on being an inclusive workplace and employer of choice. We encourage and welcome applications from people from all backgrounds and aim to have a workforce that, at all levels, represents the communities we serve. We champion equality, diversity, inclusion and wellbeing and aim to create a workplace where everyone feels valued, has a sense of belonging and is empowered to be their best, that is the Westminster Way. The Council is a Disability Confident Employer. If you have declared a disability in your application, we guarantee an interview if you meet the essential criteria of the job. If you are invited for interview, you will be asked if you need any reasonable adjustments in order to attend, and we will make these wherever possible.
