Energy Systems Catapult is an independent research and technology organisation. Our mission is to accelerate Net Zero energy innovation.

Launched in 2015 by Innovate UK, the Catapult has built a team of more than 250 people, with a range of technical, engineering, consumer, commercial, incubation, digital and policy expertise.?They draw on sector-leading test facilities, modelling tools, and data collected from our back catalogue of more than 500 research projects.

We use that ‘whole energy’ system capability to support innovative companies -- small and large – to test, trial and scale their new products and services. Our impact comes when those innovators attract new customers, new investment and new grants so they can thrive in the future energy system.

Based in Birmingham, Energy Systems Catapult is part of a network of nine, world-leading technology and innovation centres, established by Innovate UK. The Catapult Network fosters collaboration between industry, government, research organisations, academia, and many others to transform great ideas into valuable products and services.

Context

The Business Model Innovation team is a specialist team within the Catapults wider Systems Integration team. We identify, analyse and validate future business models that can help transform the UK energy system. This leverages ESC wider research and innovation capabilities and external expertise to develop evidence-based and insight.

We are looking for a committed professional with a proven track record in developing and assessing challenges and opportunities across the energy system. This could have been in a Commercial or Technical role in the private or public sector. Demonstrable experience and a strong understanding of economic and financial appraisal of low carbon energy projects is required.

Role Purpose

The Senior Financial Modeller is responsible for applying financial modelling tools and methods to assess the commercial viability of new business models in the energy sector. This will include working directly with the private sector, SMEs in our incubation programmes, on collaborative research and development programmes and with government.

The role is primarily focused on undertaking value and cost analysis of projects and business models, helping to determine financial viability and how they can be delivered at scale, including new value to customers, businesses, Local Authorities or Government. Projects will be regularly assessing the commercial viability now and in the future of emerging energy business models and creating a detailed understanding of the future revenue and cost structures in the energy sector. The role will also involve supporting the design, assessment and test of new business models in the energy sector

Our work is largely project based – delivering advice and support to partners as part of their research & development strategy. The role involves strong communication and analytical skills with the ability to lead workshops, events and reports that will involve multiple stakeholders. You will be expected to adapt and use a wide variety of financial models and be able to create clear, concise outputs for the funders and innovators we work with.

Key Deliverables and Objectives

  • Produce and manage high quality financial analysis tools and models to help evaluate the commercial viability of projects and business models
  • Management and Development, support learning and development across BMI team by running internal workshops and maintaining tools, models and resources   
  • Work with BMI colleagues to identify new opportunities for business model innovation and use financial analysis to support decision making
  • Create strong relationships with internal and external experts when assessing new business models and markets
  • Lead on and influence Business Development, including medium and major category bids and proposals to ensure the team is supporting regular and impactful pipeline of work
  • Improve and develop Business Model Innovation team capabilities and assets with a focus on the commercial and financial appraisal techniques required to validate commercial viability of business models
  • Contribute to the Business Model Innovation team’s planning and management of team processes (e.g. team ‘BMI file structure’ process, quality assurance, etc.)

 Key Work Activities

  • Lead the delivery of Business Model Innovation team projects, and provide expert input into other ESC projects
  • Work with colleagues internally and externally to develop and detail new ideas for business models that will better meet customer needs in different parts of the value chain
  • Apply and continue to develop ESCs methodology for assessing and testing new energy system business models
  • Provide expert advice and analysis to inform business cases, economic evaluation and cost benefit analysis for ESC platforms and partners
  • Facilitate meetings and workshops with ESC partners and clients
  • Help co-ordinate work with other ESC capability areas including Market, Policy and Regulation, Consumer Insight, Digital & Data and Modelling
  • Produce high quality presentations, reports and commercial analysis for ESC platforms and clients of the Business Model Innovation team
  • Provide thought leadership in the energy market on new energy business models
  • Attend key external events and industrial forums to represent the ESC and Business Model Innovation teams’ work
  • Provide guidance for Business Model Innovation team and other colleagues working on projects
  • Horizon scanning and maintaining ESC knowledge on the future of the energy market, business model innovation methods and economic and financial appraisal

What credentials are we ideally looking for?

  • Have a degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. mathematics, accounting or finance)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead on projects and analyse large data sets to extract meaningful insight
  • Experience of helping bring new innovation and concepts to market with both large corporates and small businesses
  • Demonstrated ability of leading business case development and financial appraisals for new concepts
  • Strong understanding of discounted cashflow methods, economic and financial appraisal, literate and numerate, statistically literate
  • Understanding of the energy system, policy and issues relevant to the energy transition
