Job description

We’re looking for a Senior Gardener with outstanding leadership skills to join the team at Woolbeding Gardens.

This is an exciting opportunity to take ownership of The Silk Route Garden, build your skills and help develop an outstanding contemporary garden.

Interviews will be held on the 2nd of February.

What it's like to work here:The Senior Gardener role to The Silk Route is best described by our Planting and Design Consultant Fergus Garrett of Great Dixter. The Silk Route Gardens takes a journey from Istanbul through the western Pontic Alps to the Black Sea Coast in Turkey before plunging into Anatolia and then Iran, notably the Zagros Mountains and the Kopet Dag mountain range, into the Himalayas, before entering the oasis of the Tarim Basin, the Tien Shan Mountain range through to China and eventually entering a Heatherwick designed glasshouse containing northern Vietnamese and subtropical Chinese vegetation.

The garden predominantly uses plants specific to each region although some garden cultivars are used to show how wild plants have been developed in cultivation. The garden is meant to depict the wild vegetation of the Silk Route and needs sensitive care and maintenance, allowing plants to be free and natural looking whilst maintaining the high standards we’re aiming for. A high skill level, an acute eye for detail and a knowledge of plants is essential.

The Silk Route Garden is a relatively young garden which needs developing. Layer after layer of plants will need to be added to broaden the range of plants making it a jewel box of a garden showing the extraordinary range of plants found in the wild through this journey.
