The Role
We have reimagined the way we deliver our University IT Services, building a world-class IT department responsive to the needs of our global community. We’re growing significantly and we’ve created new opportunities and made changes to how we work. Our people have been at the centre of this change, with a particular focus on development and opportunities to learn new skills.
We are looking for a Senior Infrastructure Analyst to provide second line support for all services provided by our wider Infrastructure Team and to manage the NUIT data centres. You will represent the area as a subject matter expert (SME) and deliver excellent operational support through proactive measurement and monitoring of services.
This is a place-based opportunity based in our Newcastle city campus and requires on site working.

Key Accountabilities
  • Provision of physical and virtual servers for core University services to ensure that associated incidents and service requests are resolved within agreed timescales and the provision of advice to customers
  • Responsible for the deployment, installation, maintenance and retirement of services within Infrastructure and the wider University
  • To investigate raised issues related to our infrastructure and action an appropriate response, whether this is fixing the issue or escalating with detailed evidence. This may include using command line tools such as PowerShell to maintain and troubleshoot devices, groups or mailboxes on premise or in the cloud
  • To regularly inspect our various data centres/server rooms and identify any potential issues. Issues can include replacing faulty parts, arranging third party repair workers to come on-site and proactively monitoring temperature, power and hardware anomalies
  • To work with stakeholders and manage hardware compliance of core business systems to ensure they comply with Cyber Essentials. This includes all physical SAP systems and other core services using change management processes
  • To create and maintain documentation for processes critical to Infrastructure services
  • Act as a Data Centre and Operations SME utilising their extensive knowledge and experience, and use this to deliver excellence in operational support, project and change delivery and help in defining the future strategy
  • Management of essential Systems management Consoles such as VMWare, Azure, CloudIQ etc.
  • Act as a point of escalation for incidents or requests whether they be related to support, change or project delivery
  • Deliver any project or change related activity as part of wider NUIT or Newcastle University project teams
  • Take responsibility for management of tasks and activities allocated to them by their manager and act as a deputy to the team manager if so required
  • Engage with stakeholders and 3rd party companies to provide advice, consultancy, support and guidance in relation to this area
  • To maintain up-to-date records for asset management systems, purchasing equipment and updating inventory
  • Understand and implement the Technology Roadmap and help to keep it up to date by being a subject matter SME
  • Ensure that policies, standards, procedures and guidelines are followed by the team and input to those polices etc. as required
  • Any other reasonable duties that fall within the scope of the post, as allocated by the line manager
The Person (Essential)
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Technical background in our core technologies within the rest of the Infrastructure team including networking, server and O/S management, virtualisation and cloud technologies
  • Experience of supporting and delivering operational services in a complex and geographically diverse organisation including the management and operation of data centres
  • Experience of working with third party vendors and delivering an effective service using their services
  • Experience of helping to create roadmaps and deliver programmes to remove technical debt
  • Interest in identifying and implementing new and innovative technologies to support customer needs, drive up quality and improve value
  • A working knowledge of Cybersecurity processes and practices is essential
  • Experience of working with multiple support and resolver groups across a wide variety of technologies
  • Must be willing and able to obtain any certifications required for this role including security clearances, health and safety regulations, working in hazardous environments etc. Must be willing and able to work in all University settings including medical laboratories, human tissue laboratories, hazardous areas etc.

Qualifications
A technical qualification (HNC/HND or equivalent level) or equivalent technical experience
