Job description

DWP. Digital with Purpose.

DWP is the UK's largest government department. We help people into work and make payments worth over £195bn a year, to support millions of daily users.

We have an exciting opportunity to join our thriving UCD community as Senior Interaction Designer.

As a service designer, you will collaborate with talented colleagues who are motivated by helping people in our society.

You will use user-centred design methods to improve the experiences of millions of customers who rely on DWP services.

The scale of what we do is extraordinary, and our purpose is unique. We'd love you to join us.

What will I do day-to-day?

You'll make sure everything we design is accessible to every user.

You know the value of user centred design, for digital and non-digital interactions, and you can work effectively across multiple teams.

You'll be our IxD expert and a champion for accessibility and inclusion, always scanning the impact and opportunity of new technologies and trends.

Working closely with designers in other teams, you will give constructive feedback and help lead the development of design patterns, using research and analytics to understand user needs and identify opportunities.

You'll be creating prototypes using the latest technology and methodologies, advising and leading others on prototyping best practice.

You'll also be part of a thriving UCD community in DWP, with opportunities to grow your skills and career and to shape what design means, and can achieve, in public services.

Essential Criteria

We are looking for people that can demonstrate the following skills and experience. You'll need to show us these in your application:

  • User focus - Using data from research and analytics to understand user's needs and test designs to meet them
  • Evidence and context-based design - Working with others to design solutions that are based on evidence and help identify gaps in knowledge
  • Prototyping - Using a variety of prototyping tools and techniques
  • Communication - Presenting your work and share design decisions, explaining ideas in a way that people understand and actively listen to other people's input
  • Accessibility - Designing with accessibility in mind, showing familiarity with the WCAG 2.1 guidelines and designing to meet AA standards
  • Collaboration - Working in the open, engaging others in the design process

Details. Wages. Perks.

You'll join us based at one of our brilliant digital hubs in either Birmingham or Leeds.

In return for your skills, we offer pay up to £63,517 per annum.

You'll also get a brilliant civil service pension with employer contributions of 27.9%. That's worth up to £17,721 a year.

Plus, a generous leave package starting at 26 days, rising over time to 31 days, family friendly flexible working arrangements, such as hybrid working, job sharing, term-time working, flexitime and compressed hours.

Our benefits package is built around your work-life balance and includes:

  • Time off volunteering and charitable giving
  • Learning and development tailored to your role, including industry recognised qualifications, coaching and mentoring
  • Discounts and savings on shopping, fun days out and more
  • Interest-free loans to buy a bike or a season ticket
  • Sports and social activities
  • An inclusive and diverse environment with opportunities to join staff networks including Women's Network, National Race Network, National Disability Network (THRIVE) and many more
