The summer of 2024 promises to be one of the busiest and most exciting periods of any sporting calendar. From the climax of the domestic and European football seasons, to the Men's Euros in Germany and then the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Paris. All that without a mention of Wimbledon fortnight or The Open golf championship.
BBC Radio 5 Live Sport is looking for a senior programme maker to join our team; someone who could produce the biggest Live Sporting events, as well as programmes like the Monday Night Club, the Friday Football Social; someone who has the experience to play a key role in development of content ideas and people.
Away from our Live Sport programming we would also like to hear from someone with the creativity, skills and experience to produce our digital on demand audio including podcasts such as: The Football Daily, The Euros Daily, Rugby Union Weekly, Test Match Special, and Fantasy 606)
This is a role for someone with passion, skills and loads of real experience producing complex Live Sport output, live studio debate and podcast production.
We want BBC Sport's output to reflect and understand the audiences we serve - for example, the different geographical regions of the UK and the experience of people from underrepresented groups. We would therefore encourage applications from individuals with skills or experience that can help contribute towards ensuring we maximise the diversity of our coverage and content.
Main Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work in BBC Radio 5 Live Sport as part of our Audio team. Working both individually and with others to develop treatments of the highest quality and deliver creative and engaging programme content; working with our on air talent you will be able to write and edit scripts; using editing tools you will also have experience of packaging and editing material. You will be responsible for the production of distinctive Sport programmes which may be live or recorded.
Are you the right candidate?
You will have a drive to ensure that our output reflects the audiences we serve. The successful candidate will need to have experience of working in audio and/or digital production and be able to demonstrate strong editorial judgement and solid journalistic skills. You should have a passion for sport and be able to write quickly, accurately and succinctly. Experience of how to find and generate sports journalism stories is also essential.
A wide knowledge of sport is a must but we would be interested to hear of any specialist knowledge and interest. We are also looking for candidates who have a strong understanding of digital platforms and podcast making, as well how online tools can be used to promote our content.
The job will often be unsupervised and require a large degree of initiative and creativity, with the high editorial, journalism and production values expected by the BBC. You will have valid experience of making strong editorial judgements with the ability to make sound decisions in a pressurised live broadcasting environment.
For specific information relating to this role please look at the Appendix section of the attached Job Description. Please note the Senior Journalist title relates to the team structure of the department. We are looking to appoint a highly experienced Sport output producer with relevant and demonstrable production experience of live or on demand sport content so a Journalist qualification is not essential for the right candidate.
This is not an entry level role, we're looking for candidates with experience within the area, please review the criteria for the role before applying. The right candidate will be expected to do a mix of home and office working, based in MediaCity UK, Salford.
