We are looking for a Senior Laboratory Scientist (virology) to join our Technical Services Team.

Title: Senior Laboratory Scientist(Virology)

Salary: £36040, per annum


Contract: Permanent, fulltime

Hours: 35 per week (standard Anthony Nolan working hours)

Location:Anthony Nolan Laboratories, Hampstead, London

This senior role in the Technical Services Team is essential for the team to maintain coordinated efforts to improve our services for patients and donors. The Senior Laboratory Scientist provides technical expertise and analysis for the team, working closely with the Technical Services Supervisor to ensure continued excellence in the work we provide. Supporting, reporting, and improving, are the key focuses of this role, and the individual will bring with them a passion for progress.

Specifically, this role will initially be contributing to the evaluation of available virology screening systems for the laboratory, with subsequent validation and implementation in line with UKAS accreditation requirements. Please check the candidate pack for extended requirements.


Key responsibilities

  • Lead on assessment of commercially available virus screening services, against laboratory requirements and potential services development.
  • Validate new services in the laboratory in accordance with UKAS regulations.
  • Provide training and support to colleagues for the laboratory services techniques
  • Troubleshooting of processes and suggestions for improvement
  • Efficiently perform techniques and responsibilities to a high standard
  • Lead on quality and efficiency day to day in the laboratory
  • Author quality documentation related to the role responsibilities
  • Use KPIs to evaluate, identify gaps and improve processes
  • Support quality investigations to ensure standards are maintained
  • Take accountability for actions and tasks within the Technical Services Team
  • Monitor day-to-day activities of laboratory techniques


Essential Attributes

  • Minimum degree in Life Sciences (further education is welcome, and education that includes a virology specialism is highly preferred)
  • Minimum four years in an accredited laboratory
  • Experience of validating systems in a laboratory
  • Strong knowledge of virus screening methods, including chemiluminescence, ELISA, PCR.
  • Knowledge of infectious disease mechanisms
  • Ability to prioritise workload to keep up with a fast-moving environment.
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Experience using the following instruments is highlydesirable:
  • Dynex DS2/ Dynex Multiplier/Roche/Cobas e801/ Abbott Architect or any alternative automated Virology Screening methods
