The Council has invested in its in-house legal team to support the delivery of the Council’s priorities and the new structure supports the team in the delivery of legal services across the Council. This is an exciting time to join us and help us to build, establish and develop the new team.

Our in-house legal team advises a wide range of the Council’s departments, from contracts and procurement, planning, licensing and regulatory to major projects. The team aim to provide high quality, clear and pragmatic advice to professional officers.”

We have a few new exciting roles and are looking to hire two Senior Lawyers to join our Legal Team. Ideally, we are looking for applicants who have a strong background in providing legal advice to variety of clients, and hold a relevant degree (qualified CILEX, Solicitor or Barrister, licensed to practice). You will have experience of providing advice on complex legal work matters to Members, Officers and other stakeholders, and will be expected to attend at Committee Meetings on a regular basis, outside of usual office hours and in the evening at short notice.

You will be required to ensure that the implications of local government law are understood and complied with, including the statutory requirement within the Council. You will draft and advise on reports for Cabinet, Council Committees and other meetings as required ensuring that all procedural and standing order requirements are complied with. 

In these roles you will be expected to display sound decision making skills, including remarkable interpersonal, excellent verbal, influencing, and written communication, and be confident in public speaking, and problem solving. Also be an self-motivated individual with commitment to achieving targets, well organised professional and handle a broad caseload including general and property matters. Including having the ability to handle high pressure of work and meet tight deadlines and apply flexibility to work as part of a team, mostly working independently and prioritising your own workload. You will support the Head of Legal Services in more complex and sensitive work, dealing with contentious and non-contentious matters, and also supervise and manage staff in the team. 
JOB PURPOSE:

  • To deliver good quality legal advice to client departments, ensuring they are aware of, and comply with, statutory requirements and the Council’s activities are conducted in a lawful and transparent matter.
  • To contribute to the day-to-day delivery of the Legal Service and to embed a culture of continuous improvement in service quality, cost efficiency and customer responsiveness.
  • To support the Head of Legal Services in the delivery of a high quality and effective services.
  • To fully engage as part of the wider team to ensure both service and cross service objectives are achieved. This will involve matrix working, ‘task to finish’ operations and overall effective marshalling of resources across the authority to enable a forward looking, responsive and innovative culture delivering sustainable and high-quality services.
  • To contribute to the teams service plans and team plans are completed.

As we are requiring two Senior Lawyers the requirement is for one to to work in the two different specialised areas covering (Planning or Contract & Procurement). This is detailed in the two different person specifications and you will need to ensure you meet these requirements and hold experience in working in these areas.
