The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Lead Counsel you will provide legal, strategic services and advice to internal clients including senior management across our European business with support outside the UK from internal counsel and external counsel (footprint countries – UK, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands). Day to day activities include general Legal Counsel and advice involving internal strategic objectives and relationships with internal and external stakeholders / clients (eg sales, contractors, agents, customer relations and operational teams and supply chain), litigation avoidance and management, dispute resolution, legislative matters, tracking and review. You will also provide education, guidance, advice and legal support and counsel. Including some specialized work - insurance distribution arrangements/contracting. Research, writing and analysis of emerging and existing legislation and regulatory developments affecting various business segments of the insurance industry.

Your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Provides advice and counsel to business stakeholders across the enterprise to facilitate growth whilst proactively identifying and managing potential legal risks.
  • Advise on actions that can be taken to avoid or minimize these risks and/or recommendations for alternative solutions in line with local regulatory environments and Assurant’s internal compliance philosophies.
  • Work cross-functionally and cross border with compliance, privacy, risk management, business colleagues, information security and vendor management groups.
  • Draft and Negotiate Contracts and Legal Documents and contract interpretation.
  • Research and perform analysis to assess impact of legislation (UK and rest of Europe), regulations, recent court opinions and administrative interpretations on business practices and procedures.

You will have the following experience:

  • An undergraduate degree;
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from an accredited law school or equivalent conversion qualification; and
  • Licensure (current practicing certificate) and membership in good standing with the SRA.
  • Knowledge of applicable English laws and regulations.
  • Possesses and applies knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures to the completion of difficult assignments. Adds value in direct consultation with business leaders; strong, effective oral and written communications skills. Can communicate legal concerns in non-technical ways and provide pragmatic solutions.
  • Ability to evaluate factual situations, identify legal issues, locate applicable legal authority, analyze and understand statutes, regulations and case law and recommend appropriate and defensible courses of action.
  • Strong business acumen; ideally a thorough knowledge of insurance regulations is preferred although there is an understanding there is an expectation this will be developed more in tenure.
  • Ability to efficiently manage a large volume of contracts or projects and evidence strong, independent contract drafting.
