The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy, and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.
We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.
The Discovery Research team supports a broad programme of transformative research that leads to significant shifts in our understanding of life, health, and wellbeing. We are pursuing this programme through both open and directed funding routes to enable individuals and teams to pursue bold and creative research within our broad remit. Our work in the Early Careers space is critical to this mission.
Both our funding provision and thought leadership are needed to support a strong pipeline in this transitional time in the research pathway. We actively fund into the system through our Early Career Awards and doctoral programmes and continue to support activities that work to encourage individual career development and establish excellent research environments in which individuals can flourish. Early careers are relevant across all geographies and disciplines, and as a member of the Early Career and Career Development Researchers team you'll be able to share your passion and expertise with colleagues from across both Discovery Research and the wider organisation.
You'll be joining a close team of colleagues who share a vision for supporting early career researchers and have a breadth of research backgrounds across the Discovery Research remit. Working with the Head of Early Career and Career Development Researchers you'll be contributing to both the line management and development of the team, as well as leading activity, innovation and partnership building for our growing portfolio.
In such a broad area as the early career space there will always be new opportunities, and we'll be working together to identify and evidence where Wellcome can make the greatest impact.
In this role you will:
Provide leadership, direction and have oversight of the early career research activities that are integral to the mission of Discovery Research
Shape the way Discovery Research can better support research and the transitions into, and out of, this career stage and use this information to grow our network of influence with other stakeholders to strengthen support for this work.
Identify common interests and shape opportunities for new partnerships, including with funders, partner organisations, industry and academic institutions in pursuit of DR's strategic direction.
Share your knowledge and understanding of Early Careers research of all types, ensuring this is kept up to date and shared with other relevant groups within Wellcome to help advance their work.
Develop a framework to monitor, review and evaluate Discovery Research's Early Career research activities, providing the evidence base for our interventions and development
Build, manage, lead and motivate an integrated, inclusive and flexible team through both direct reports and matrixed working
Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.
To be successful in this role you will have:
Significant expertise in early career research within higher education and research landscape (a PhD or equivalent research experience)
Experience of working in a research leadership role that provides experience to understand the ambitions of a major funder
Experience of stakeholder engagement from multiple perspectives within a project to enable the development of a balanced perspective.
Experience of developing networks of researchers, including outreach into new communities and a commitment to growing diversity
A track record of harnessing team members to work on complex projects with excellent results and awareness for personal development
