Job description

Your Impact:
About the Opportunity
Jacobs is currently recruiting for a Senior Modelling Consultant to join our Radioactive Waste Management and Disposal business. The role can be based at Harwell, Dorchester or Birchwood and other locations will be considered. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary business (including physicists, mathematicians, engineers, chemists, geologists, safety case specialists and project managers) who provide modelling, consultancy, safety case advise and laboratory expertise to underpin the science, technology and engineering to allow the safe management or disposal of radioactive waste.
The successful candidate will provide modelling expertise across a portfolio of projects within the area of Radioactive Waste Management. Throughout the lifecycle for waste management, modelling activities may include expected and accident performance for different areas (e.g. thermal, impact, criticality safety, containment) and wasteform or container evolution. These may be to inform compliance or design requirements, or be part of a safety justification. Modelling approaches will also be varied, from using well established software packages to seeking insight into system behaviour from tools to capture key physical processes. You will provide expertise to both large and small consultancy projects and proposals, many of which are multi-disciplinary. You will also have the opportunity to support or lead client relationships and projects, provide advice and deliver technical reports in line with client and regulatory requirements, and provide expert advice to the preparation of proposals.
You will have the opportunity to work alongside a diverse group of team members to meet our evolving customer needs. You will also be supported to develop your skills and experience as well as offered opportunities to build a successful career and lead technical teams.
Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Modelling Consultant, you will provide technical expertise and advise on a range of consultancy projects for customers, including radioactive waste management organisations, radioactive waste producers and regulators, both in the UK and overseas. The responsibilities include:
  • Leading or providing significant input to modelling studies in a range of technical areas; this is likely to include both simple and complex modelling to underpin the safety of the waste management lifecycle, including storage, transport, treatment or disposal. Key modelling areas could include:

o thermal or impact modelling of radioactive waste under storage, transport or disposal conditions
o criticality safety assessment of radioactive waste under storage, transport or disposal conditions, including the challenge of simulating the potential consequences of criticality events.
o simulating materials evolution over long timescales, using either deterministic or probabilistic methods
  • Implementing efficient tools and routes for the robust management of data in support of modelling activities or more widely
  • Producing, and checking calculations, analyses, design basis documentation and technical reports
  • Delivering high-quality and bespoke technical and strategic support to our clients
  • Developing an understanding of the fundamental requirements of our customers, and how we can meet those requirements, through excellent client relationships
  • Supporting development of our modelling capability with respect to radioactive waste management and disposal, including mentoring and developing our graduates and other junior staff
  • Supporting other team members with business development activities
  • Supporting the continued development of our business, through identifying, bidding for and winning new work, either with new or existing clients

Here's What You'll Need:
  • Degree qualification (or equivalent training and experience) in appropriate mathematical, scientific or engineering discipline
  • Significant experience in application and development of mathematical models of relevance to waste management. The ideal candidate should have experience in at least one of:
  • criticality safety assessment
  • thermal or impact modelling
  • wasteform evolution modelling
  • developing methods, tools or software to understand the key physics of problems
  • data management expertise in relation to modelling activities
  • Ability to analyse complex systems and models, distil the important safety insights and communicate concisely with specialists and senior stakeholders
  • Demonstrable ability to write clearly and present complex arguments in a well-structured manner
  • Understanding of the nuclear industry, with experience of one or more of the following:
  • UK regulatory and policy landscape for the management of radioactive waste, including compliance requirements
  • Waste management principles including application of the waste hierarchy
  • The application of Best Available Techniques (BAT) and how is it assessed in the context of radioactive waste management
  • The UK Radioactive Waste Inventory, including different classifications and waste streams
  • Waste management processes across the entire lifecycle: characterisation, retrieval, processing, treatment, packaging, storage, transport and disposal
