NAHT is looking for an experienced policy professional to take on the role of Senior Policy & Equalities Officer, for a 12 month maternity cover. The successful candidate will take lead responsibility for specific policy areas, including capital funding and issues pertaining to school business leaders. They will also lead and deliver against the union’s equality and diversity strategic plan.
Reporting to the Head of Policy, you will be responsible for the independent management of key stakeholder relationships, including working with government and with NAHT’s National Executive to develop and advance the union’s key policy positions and priorities across a range of areas.
As the Senior Policy lead for equality and diversity, you will provide expertise and guidance to others on equality and diversity in terms of the union’s policy objectives relating to practice and professional issues.
Working closely with other directorates the postholder will ensure that there is a strong focus on improving equality and diversity within the NAHT’s own membership and the wider school leadership workforce. You will be expected to communicate the union’s work on diversity and equality with a wide range of different audiences, both internally and externally.
You will also act as a servicing officer to a number of National Executive committees, including the Diversity and Inclusion Group and School Business Leaders Sector Council. You will be part of the NAHT’s policy team and work collaboratively to contribute equalities perspectives in other policy areas including, for example, aspects of curriculum and safeguarding, and may lead on additional policy areas where appropriate.
Person specification
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who has substantial experience of working in a policy environment, leading policy areas and influencing the education landscape. You will also have a strong understanding of the equality and diversity agenda and experience of leading and motivating others on equality and diversity issues.
Good knowledge of relevant equality and diversity legislation and the practical application of it in policies, procedures and practices with proven success are essential for this role.
Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to establish credibility with internal and external stakeholders together with presenting to a wide range of audiences is critical.
