Job description

About the role

National Grid Interconnectors is at the forefront of delivering low carbon electricity between Great Britain and Europe. We provide the infrastructure and the market arrangements to move power to where it is most needed, providing security of supply for the countries that we connect.

How our interconnectors are developed and operate is under review through a number of strategic governmental and regulatory programmes, such as the Electricity Networks Commissioner’s recommendations (Winser review) and the Centralised Strategic Network Plan.

In this role you will lead the development of a National Grid Interconnectors regulatory strategy, setting our regulatory direction at this critical time, to ensure that our interconnectors continue to be a central piece of the net zero energy transition. You will have numerous opportunities to present your work to senior internal and external stakeholders.

This permanent role can be based from Warwick or London and we offer flexible working arrangements. We’d hope to see you in the office one day a week, and you’re welcome to be in the office more often if that would work best for you. We’re happy to discuss any additional flexibility in working patterns or requirements that you feel could help to make this job work for you.

Key accountabilities

You'll be given responsibility to develop, lead and influence our regulatory strategy on specific policy areas impacting our business. The areas of work associated with this role will include:

  • Develop a regulatory strategy for how the UK should determine the future requirement for interconnection.
  • Design a blueprint for how Ofgem and/or the Future System Operator should select successful interconnector projects.
  • Ensure that your proposals are compatible with the approach to network development and operations in Europe.
  • Perform horizon scanning to ensure our business is up-to-date on governmental and regulatory initiatives impacting network development and operations, setting out the implications on the interconnector business.
  • Develop and maintain a network of regulation and strategy contacts to support your regulatory strategy positions.
  • Present your regulatory strategy work to internal and external stakeholders, bringing them on board with your proposals.
  • This will involve consideration of our position on the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements and the market and operability arrangements for Offshore Hybrid Assets (our new generation of interconnectors, which combine cross border assets with offshore wind generation).
  • Shape the future of regulatory strategy at National Grid Interconnectors.

About you

You must be a strategic thinker with the ability to process complex information, identify the key considerations and develop a regulatory strategy around them.

Clear written and verbal communication is also expected, as you will often present your proposals to a senior audience. Good attention to detail is required given the financial and reputational value of the work involved.

Regulation and policy experience in the energy sector is required for this role.

Don’t meet every single requirement? If you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t match the job description exactly, we encourage you to apply anyway. You might just be the right person for our growing business in this role or another one.

What you'll get

A competitive salary between £50,000 - £63,000 – dependent on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
