How can sectors like aviation transform themselves for a zero-carbon economy? How can business help create the policies and actions to deliver a sustainable economy that works for all? What do challenges like climate change, inequality and the collapse in biodiversity mean for different parts of the economy and how can business and government come together to face them?

We are looking for an exceptional individual to undertake a new role that will help develop innovative partnerships and thought leadership to answer these questions.

The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) is a globally influential institute working on a mission to develop leadership and solutions towards a sustainable economy. Its Policy and Systems Change team develops new thinking and runs innovative collaborations to support the transition to a sustainable and climate neutral economy.

As a Senior Programme Manager you would provide strategic leadership, delivering an ambitious programme of content development, strategy project management, project development and engagement with key stakeholders. You would manage the development and delivery of business relevant thought leadership and projects that break new ground and aim to deliver projects that can contribute to the transformation of the economy.

You would lead the delivery of a number of projects including the Aviation Impact Accelerator - a partnership between CISL, the Cambridge Whittle Laboratory and a number of other expert institutions and individuals, that seeks to accelerate the decarbonisation of the aviation sector.

Key skills and experience:

    The ideal candidate would have a demonstrable alignment with CISL's values and the following essential skills and experience:
  • Understanding of climate and sustainability issues and how they affect business and the economy
  • Understanding of policy-making and experience of working to shape policy
  • Strong relationship management skills and a proven ability to grow and maintain relationships with partners
  • Strong project management and organisational skills, including experience of event management, developing and maintaining budgets and managing multiple complex projects at one time
  • Strong analytical skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to make complex content accessible to a wide range of audiences
  • Experience of working flexibly and on own initiative, operating in a fast-paced pressured environment as part of a project team

The following attributes are desirable:

  • Understanding of the challenges of decarbonising the aviation sector
  • Experience of working with academics and on complex multi-disciplinary projects
  • Experience in developing and overseeing thought leadership projects and producing written work on sustainability and climate change
