Job description

· To communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, relatives and staff, overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events · To enhance effective communication strategies within the department and promote excellent interpersonal communication, enabling optimum communication with staff, patients, their families and the multi- disciplinary team · To demonstrate politeness, courtesy, respect and sensitivity in dealing with patients/staff, and visitors/relatives, maintaining good customer relations · Maintain and promote effective communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team and other Wards/Departments · To adapt communication skills to meet the needs of patients who may have barriers to communication · Contribute towards sharing good practice within the ward/department/hospital · To work cohesively with all members of the ward team in ensuring that the very best services to patients are provided at all times · Keep accurate and complete records of patient’s documentation and care plans. Ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to HMT standards (including electronic records) · Maintaining confidentiality and integrity of information in line with data protection and GDPR · To take charge of the clinical area, utilising appropriate support as necessary from senior managers · To manage allocated resources effectively and efficiently. This includes maintaining the correct skill mix of staff for patient dependency, bed management, utilisation of time and equipment, in the absence of senior staff · To assist in ensuring the safety of the ward and the risk management process by actively participating in clinical risk and quality issues, including the reporting and management of clinical incidents · Contribute to developing and maintaining a unit philosophy and model of care · To act as a clinical role model and leader for all members of staff · To ensure that each Patient is assessed and that their care is planned, implemented and evaluated in negotiation with the patient and that this is accurately documented · Provide care with an advanced clinical understanding of the therapies and drugs used within a surgical setting and be competent in their administration · To be competent in the administration of medication, including intravenous routes · Maintaining and monitoring levels of stock to ensure there are adequate levels of supplies · To ensure clinical practice is evidence based or peer reviewed · To ensure that treatments prescribed are carried out, and that sufficient handovers are provided to team members to ensure of changes in the patient’s condition are shared · To develop open and trusting relationships with other members of the multidisciplinary team, other departments and community services as necessary · To demonstrate a professional approach to work and act in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct at all times and to ensure that team members do likewise · To act as a preceptor for junior staff nurses · To ensure the provision of appropriate supervision and support to members of the team · To be a resource for students and junior colleagues, facilitating their development Provide a challenging supportive environment for education within the unit Supervise and orientate learners, temporary staff and staff new to the clinical area · Maintain own professional development and mandatory training Teach patients the clinical skills that they may be required to care for their themselves within another clinical setting or at home · Comply with Infection Prevention and Control principles, techniques, policy and guidelines. · To demonstrate awareness and compliance with HMT policies, procedures, guidelines, standards and core behaviours · To be aware of HMT framework of clinical governance and patient safety walk rounds within the ward or department Identify and report clinical risks to the appropriate department so that action can be taken in accordance with HMT risk management policy
